Hungry for Action High-risk groups are priority
poverty s
imulation
for flu vaccines
On behalf of the Poverty
to Prosperity in Huron
group, we are very excited
to invite you to the Hungry
for Action poverty simula-
tion on November 4, 2014
at the Health & Library
Complex, just south of
Clinton.
Join municipal officials
and local business leaders
from across Huron County
for this unique, interactive
event. Take on the role of a
Huron County resident liv-
ing in poverty - you'll make
decisions, seek resources
and discover whether the
cards of chance help or hin-
der you. You'll also gain
important knowledge of the
community you represent,
including services available
and service gaps. This invi-
tation is open to front line
workers, management staff,
and volunteers at your
agency.
Agencies will be available
around the room for indi-
viduals to receive assis-
tance and learn about what
is offered in the community
to help support these fami-
lies. If you have resources
that you would like to share
at this event, please let us
know.
What will the simulation
be like? Participants will
arrive and be put into "fam-
ily" groups. They will be
given an explanation of the
family including a descrip-
tion of all members, ages,
jobs, income, pets, etc as
well as the actual "smart"
money to use during the
game and envelopes to
"pay expenses": They will
also receive information
about housing costs, family

expenses (entertainment,
food, travel, school costs,
and utilities) and will be
required to budget for the
month.
Throughout the event,
situation cards will be
given to the families that
will provide additional
money or require them to
pay for additional
unplanned expenses in the
same way that many fami-
lies experience daily life.
Many of these situations
are linked to the various
agencies.
At the end of the allotted
time, a debriefing session
will be held to discuss how
everyone came up with
their final budget, how
choices were made about
which bills were paid, how
they handled the unex-
pected cards and what peo-
ple thought or felt during
the experience.
If you would like to par-
ticipate, and if you have
resources to contribute,
please contact Lori Saggers
by October 17. Thanks for
your assistance in making
this event a success.
Until October 23, flu vac-
cine will only be available to
Ontario residents at highest
risk of getting the flu and
becoming severely ill.
High-risk groups include
categories such as:
children from 6 months
to 5 years of age
• individuals over 65
• pregnant women
• health care providers
• anyone with a chronic
medical condition such
as cardiac or kidney
disease, diabetes
or asthma
"While it is important for
everyone to get their flu shot,
we really want those individ-
uals at highest risk of com-
plications and hospitaliza-
tion to get the vaccine first,"
says Public Health Nurse
Ruth Ann Ogilvie.
The Huron County Health
Unit will hold community
clinics for the general public
on Wednesday, October 29
from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the
Clinton Legion and Monday,
November 3 from 5:00-7:00
pm at Seaforth Public
School.
A list of clinics will be in
community newspapers. For
information about flu shot
clinic sites in Huron County
go to the Health Unit web-
site: http://www.huronhealt-
hunit.ca.
The best way to avoid get-
ting the flu is to get the flu
shot. The flu shot is a safe,
effective way to protect your-
self, your family, your class-
mates, your co-workers, and
your friends from getting the
flu. It is free for people who
live, work, or go to school in
Ontario.
Huron County chosen for

county.
"This is an exciting opportu-
nity for our communities to
work together to create change
and promote health among
our youth," says Joe Steffler,
Warden of the County of
Huron. "Our success in this
grant application reflects

"Healthy kids become
healthy adults," says Bonnie
Baynham, the Project Manager
for the initiative with the
Huron County Health Unit.
"This project recognizes that to
be successful we need to sup-
port not just children but also
families, schools and the com-
munities in which they live:'
The proposal was submitted
in March and included 52 let-
ters of support from politicians,
recreation providers, and vari-
ous community groups. Bayn-
ham says there will be many
opportunities for communities
to get involved as project plan-
ning gets underway over the
next several months. If you
have questions about this pro-
ject or partner involvement,
please call the Huron County
Health Unit at 519.482.3416 or
