Food banks and communities struggle during the holiday season

Many people do not real-
ize the extent of hunger's
reach in Canada, let alone
where they live.
Food banks across Huron
County feel the pressure of
high -demand during holi-
days such as Thanksgiving
and Christmas. But did you
know families seek foods
banks during normal times
of the year such as back to
school and March break?
According to Food Banks
Canada's HungerCount2013,
March saw 833,098 people
receive food from a food,
36% of which were children
and youth. 77,920 of those
people were also turning to a
food bank for the first time.
Throughout the month of
March, 4,341,659 meals were
prepared and served by soup
kitchens, shelters, school
breakfast initiatives and
other programs.
With so many needing
assistance local food banks
often feel the struggle in pro-
viding necessities and food to
those who need it most. This
is why local food banks seek
the help from within the
community through local
food drives and donations.
As Thanksgiving approaches
and Christmas being less than
three months away, here is a list
of just some items that food
banks are in need of:
Canned vegetables and fruit
Tomato/pasta sauce
Fresh produce
Rice
Pasta
Instant soup mixes/cups
Dry milk powder
Cheese spreads
Canned fish (salmon, tuna)
Canned meat (ham,
chicken, stews)
Peanut butter
Condiments
Coffee/tea
Home canned goods,
damaged cans (dented or no
label), expired foods, unpas-
teurized food (milk, honey,
cider) and foods from unin-
spected premises (home-
made sausage) should not
be donated.
Some food banks also seek
personal hygiene products
such as shampoo, soap and
toothpaste, as well as house -
