Central Huron candidates speak
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
The Central Huron 2014
municipal election will take
place on October 27. The
new term of office will start
on December 1, 2014 and
run through until November
30, 2018.
Central Huron council
consists of the mayor, deputy
mayor, three councillors
from the west ward and
three councillors from the
east ward. In this year's elec-
tion, six councillors will be
elected; Mayor Jim Ginn and
Deputy Mayor David Jewitt
are running uncontested.
In this year's election a
total of four people are run-
ning for west ward council-
lor, namely, Alison Lobb and
Burkhard Metzger (both of
whom currently sit on coun-
cil) as well as newcomers,
Patrick Nagle and Genny
Smith. For this position a
total of three people will be
elected.
Also in this year's election
a total of seven people are
running for east ward coun-
cillor, namely, Marg Ander-
son, Dan Colquhoun and
Alex Westerhout (all of
whom currently sit on coun-
cil) as well as newcomers,
Garry Haist, Kaushik Patel,
Adam Robinson and Morag
Watt. For this position a total
of three people will be
elected.
The Clinton News Record
recently asked the above
eleven candidates six ques-
tions and their answers are
outlined below. Each
response is written in the
candidate's own words,
although, some responses
have been shortened due to
the available space.
West Ward
Councillor
Alison Lobb
Why are you running?
I believe it's important to
be active in your community
and work toward its better-
ment. I've always enjoyed
being involved in commu-
nity events and projects, and
found it rewarding.
Municipal Council shows
you a very different side of
community development
and I enjoy working with our
Council and staff. We're very
fortunate in this community
to have so many truly dedi-
cated individuals!
Top 3 issues:
1. Taxes - making sure that
tax dollars are spent effec-
tively. People are increas-
ingly concerned about
downloading and increasing
regulation from upper levels
of government. Regulations
always seem to bring along
with them increased costs.
That puts a strain on your
municipal budget, yet rate-
payers want their support
services to be maintained, if
not increased. It's a delicate
balancing act.

2. Municipal and federal
programs that are impacting
our rural community - the
Green Energy Act, the inter-
est in a Deep Genealogical
Repository for nuclear waste
within our wider community
(too close to over 20% of the
world's drinking water) -
and how little control we
currently seem to have to
voice our concerns.
3. Changes in our commu-
nities - school closures,
church closings, and empty
stores on our main streets...
children (and many adults)
who spend most of their
time on their mobile tech-
nology. This is not a Central
Huron phenomenon, it
applies to most of rural
Ontario. Times are changing
and I, for one, am sad to see
many of those changes. Even
the impact of climate change
on our area is affecting us,
economically if nothing else.
It would be wonderful if we
could bring more life and
energy back into the munici-
pality, keep our children
being educated and working
locally.
