The character attribute
under consideration at Hul-
lett Central Public School in
November is "courage", an
attribute the students will
recognize was important to
each of those persons who
fought/fight for the freedoms
we Canadians enjoy.
Although it seems the
school year has just begun
the staff is already looking
forward to next year's enroll-
ment. Kindergarten registra-
tion for those youngsters
who will be three or four
years old by December 31st,
2014 happens at Hullett the
morning of November 21st.
Friday, November 7th was
a PA Day and parent/teacher
interviews were scheduled.
It was an opportunity for
parents and teachers to dis-
cus the report cards that the
pupils received on Monday,
the 3rd.
For those of you who like
to take advantage of Hydro
One's best hourly rates, the
times changed again for the
winter on November 1st.
However the overnight
hours are still the cheapest
time.
LONDESBOROUGH UNITED
CHURCH ANNIVERSARY
SERVICE
Pleasant is the word I've
chosen to describe the 154th
Anniversary Service at
Londesborough United
Church on Sunday, Novem-
ber 2nd.
Decorations in the sanctu-
ary, pretty antique tea sets
and dishes, doilies and small
lanterns, reflected the years
celebrated by the
anniversary.
A Baptism is always a
pleasing thing to have as part
of a church service and
Nolan Jacob, son of Joshua
and Tonya Yantha, began his
faith journey through Bap-
tism during the children's
time at the front that morn-
ing. Plenty of pleased rela-
tives were in attendance to
witness the sacrament
administered by Rev. Terry
Fletcher.
The service included
much pleasant music as
well. The senior choir offered
the anthem, "Walk a Little
Slower" and during the quiet
time following the message
they sang, "Deep in My
Heart': As worshipers arrived
Sharon and Kate Johnston of
Goderich, harpist and flutist,
offered pleasing music. A
selection from Andrew Lloyd
Weber's Requiem and the
Shaker Hymn were played
during the service.
The children were spoken
to by the day's guests, Rob
and Keiko Witmer. They
were told that when the
earthquake and tsunami hit
Japan and caused great dev-
astation, the children at the
Dohoku Centre where the
Witmers work helped. By
singing a song that spoke of
sadness and then of comfort
the children raised the spir-
its of the adults. The song
spoke of hugs and rest.
Londesborough children
were pleased to learn that
Japanese children helped
and that perhaps their love
helps persons they touch.
The message delivered by
Rev. Witmer was titled "Sur-
rounded" and was sup-
ported by the scripture pas-
sage, Hebrews 12: 1-13. Rob
acknowledged that their
work at the rural Dohoku
Centre in Japan is supported

by monies donated by the
Mission and Service Fund of
the United Church in Can-
ada. However Rob feels there
are similarities between his
work with the churches in
northern Japan and Londes-
borough United and that we
can learn from each other
how to continue our mis-
sions. Christians everywhere
need to remember that in
troubled times they are not
alone, that they are sur-
rounded by clouds of wit-
nesses offering support
through faith and prayer.
In the 45 years since Mr.
Witmer left for Japan, his
work there has experienced
rough times but acknowl-
edged that troubles are a
normal in everyone's life.
Jesus, Christians recognize,
had more than His share of
problems while on earth.
The Japanese are sustained
by the three -love ethic: love
for God, love for humanity
and love for the soil.
He recalled a number of
circumstances that caused
some concern in Japan but
that resolved themselves
given time and faith. Rob
gave assurance that what
seems the end many times
can be the new beginning.
One needs to watch for signs
of God's promise and find
comfort in being surrounded
by love. A pleasant reminder
for all who heard Rob's
message.
A time of fellowship fol-
lowing the service was an
enjoyable end to the
anniversary.
Londesborough United's
official board will meet on
Wednesday, November 19th
beginning at 7:30 p.m.
