J Wednesday, November 12, 2014 • News Record 13 Bawler from Clinton competes in North American Challenge Tara Ostner The Clinton News Record Some of Canada's top bowlers traveled to Sun City, Arizona last month to compete against the United States in the North Amer- ican Challenge. After an exciting three days of competing, Canada beat the Americans by winning six out of seven categories. Team Canada consisted of a total of twenty bowlers. Eleven of those bowlers are from Ontario and one of them, Kay Johns, is from right here in Clinton. Johns is a member of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association (OLBA) and plays in district 4, the district of the Clinton Lawn Bowling Club. She has been playing the sport for nine years. As she describes, competing in the North American Challenge was "a fantastic experience and it was neat to be on such a large team?' The event was Johns' first international competition and she was delighted when Bob North, Team Canada's manager, invited her. As Dave Burrows, the OLBA coaching coordinator puts it, "very gifted athletes come from small towns:' Furthermore, three of the athletes on Team Canada, namely, Kelly Mckerihen from Toronto, Mary Ann Beath from Tara Ostner, The Clinton News Record Team Canada posing for a shot in Sun City, Arizona. Arizona and Chris Stadnyk from Niagara Falls proved their skills by competing at the Com- monwealth Games in Glasgow this past summer. "We have a great mix on the team," said Davie Mathie, Team Canada's coach. The athletes participated in various training exercises in the days leading up to the North American Challenge and the competition took place on Octo- ber 16, 17 and 18. The bowlers Member of the Clinton Lawn Bowling Club, Kay Johns. were divided into teams of ten men and ten women and played a total of 48 matches allowing each athlete to play six games. As Mathie explains, "We worked together as a team and our efforts paid off. We came out strong like we planned and maintained our dominance throughout the competition. The Americans played hard and gave us a run for our money at the end but we stayed focused and came out on top." Shari Evans, special to the News Record CHSS road hockey tournament On November 5 Central Huron Secondary School hosted a road hockey tournament to raise money for the local Food Bank. Some students signed up to play in the tournament and some students were able to "buy out" of fourth period class and attend the event. The buy out only had a cost of $2 per class which produced a big turn out.
