Some of Canada's top bowlers
traveled to Sun City, Arizona last
month to compete against the
United States in the North Amer-
ican Challenge. After an exciting
three days of competing, Canada
beat the Americans by winning
six out of seven categories.
Team Canada consisted of a
total of twenty bowlers. Eleven of
those bowlers are from Ontario
and one of them, Kay Johns, is
from right here in Clinton. Johns
is a member of the Ontario Lawn
Bowling Association (OLBA) and
plays in district 4, the district of
the Clinton Lawn Bowling Club.
She has been playing the sport
for nine years.
As she describes, competing in
the North American Challenge
was "a fantastic experience and it
was neat to be on such a large
team?' The event was Johns' first
international competition and
she was delighted when Bob
North, Team Canada's manager,
invited her.
As Dave Burrows, the OLBA
coaching coordinator puts it,
"very gifted athletes come from
small towns:'

athletes on Team Canada,

Arizona and Chris Stadnyk
from Niagara Falls proved their
skills by competing at the Com-
monwealth Games in Glasgow
this past summer.
"We have a great mix on the
team," said Davie Mathie, Team
Canada's coach.
The athletes participated in
various training exercises in the
days leading up to the North
American Challenge and the
competition took place on Octo-
ber 16, 17 and 18. The bowlers

were divided into teams of ten
men and ten women and played
a total of 48 matches allowing
each athlete to play six games.
As Mathie explains, "We
worked together as a team and
our efforts paid off. We came out
strong like we planned and
maintained our dominance
throughout the competition.
The Americans played hard and
gave us a run for our money at
the end but we stayed focused
and came out on top."

CHSS road hockey tournament
On November 5 Central Huron Secondary School hosted a road hockey tournament
to raise money for the local Food Bank. Some students signed up to play in the
tournament and some students were able to "buy out" of fourth period class and
attend the event. The buy out only had a cost of $2 per class which produced a big
turn out. In the end, the school raised just shy of one thousand dollars.
