The best way to fully
understand poverty is to
experience it for one's self.
This was the main idea
behind Hungry for Action in
Huron, a poverty simulation
exercise held at the Health
and Library Complex in
Clinton on November 4.
Various people attended
the unique and interactive
event including local busi-
ness leaders, local politi-
cians, service providers and
community members. Eve-
ryone involved took on the
roles of Huron County resi-
dents living in poverty and
learned what living such a
life really entails. The event

was modeled after other
similar initiatives that have
taken place in other areas.
At the end of the simula-
tion exercise a complimen-
tary lunch consisting of
fresh, local and easily attain-
able ingredients was served
which was followed by a
brief discussion regarding
the insights that were gained
throughout the day and rec-
ommended next steps.
The poverty simulation
was sponsored by the Pov-
erty to Prosperity in Huron
Network and was a part
of a larger initiative coordi-
nated by the Ontario Soci-
ety of Nutrition Profession-
als in Public Health, an
organization of registered
dietitians working in public
health in Ontario. Impor-
tant supporters of the event
included the Huron County
Health Unit, Rural
Response for Healthy Chil-
dren, Huron County Social
and Property Services and
the United Way
Perth -Huron.
One of the first stops in the simulation exercise was the "bank."
Participants had a set, monthly budget that they had to stick to
despite certain surprise payments that came their way.
At the end of the simulation exercise, lunch, consisting of
fresh, local and easily attainable ingredients, was served in the
auditorium of the Jacob Memorial Building.
