The award presen- tation took place on Novem- ber 4 at the Jacob Memorial Building in Clinton. Last August, James Boshart and his brother were out at a local garage sale when James noticed a very pale man sitting in a chair. Someone else had noticed the man sitting lifelessly and called out for help. James sprung into action using the skills he had learned at a Red Cross First Aid course. The man had no pulse and with the help of other garage sale attendees James moved the man to the ground and began performing CPR. "If I stopped the compres- sions the man would turn purple almost instantly," said James. "Four minutes or so seemed to last forever, then the paramedics arrived and I assisted them with preparing him for the defibrillator and told them what I had done and what I knew" MERCANTILE IIS Dint PLIE MUCH MORE Christmas Open House NOVEMBER 13 TO ' E 1 r .16 25% Off regularly priced items, PA Off sale priced items, extended hours, draws, gift with purchaser fiats and much mcre Gifts. It had been less than a month since James had received his First Aid certification and because of his actions he is receiving a Rescuer Award from Canadian Red Cross. The Canadian Red Cross presents Rescuer Awards to honour citizens who go out of their way to save a life, prevent further injury, or who provide comfort to someone who has been injured. According to Red Cross polling, nearly 80 per cent of Canadians say knowing how to perform First Aid is 'very important' and almost 40 per cent of Canadians say they've been in an emer- gency situation where they had to perform First Aid. However, only 18 per cent had taken a First Aid course in the last three years. The Canadian Red Cross is the number one provider of First Aid and CPR training programs and has been offering First Aid and CPR training to Canadians for over 50 years.
