Remembrance and Poppy ou1nc I re uCn ngal Huron
The Royal Canadian Legion
is a non-profit organization
assuming the responsibility of
maintaining the tradition of
Remembrance of those who
paid the supreme sacrifice by
defending our great nation in
past and present conflicts, so
that we as Canadians can live
in the freedom that we main-
tain today.
The Legion continues to
support our Veterans of past
and present with many bene-
fits and this is due to the
determination of our thou-
sands of dedicated volunteer
members at all levels of the
organization.
Legion Remembrance pro-
grammes commemorate the
men and women who died in
the military service of Canada
during war and peace. Main-
taining the tradition of
Remembrance is a sacred
trust and the Legion's most
important role.
The Poppy has been widely
recognized as a symbol of
Remembrance, since it was
first adopted in 1921. Bywear-
ing the poppy, we demon-
strate our gratitude to those
who gave their lives for the
freedom we enjoy. Each year,
for two weeks before Remem-
brance Day, Legions through-
out Ontario carry out our
Poppy Campaign. The cam-
paign raises awareness of the
Poppy as a symbol of
Remembrance.
The basic purpose of the
poppy funds is to provide
immediate assistance to ex -
servicemen and women in
need. This may include food
shelter or medical attention
for them or their families.
Funds raised during the
Poppy Campaign are also
used for the following:
Comforts for veteran in
hospital or hospitalized
veterans
Legion Service Bureau
Expenses of the Branch Vet-
eran Services Chairman
Community medical
appliances
Medical research
Medical training
Donations for disaster relief
Educational Bursaries
Prizes for the annual
Remembrance Day Poster
and Literary (Poem and
Essay) Contests.
Any ex -serviceman or
woman or dependent is eligible
to apply for financial aid from
the Poppy, whether they are
Legion members, or not. After
expenses, such as the cost of
Poppies, wreaths and other
supplies are deducted; all
remaining monies are placed in
trust to be used on those pur-
poses authorized in the General
By-laws of The Royal Canadian
Legion. Campaign expenses
are generally low, because most
of the work is voluntary. The
Legion's constitution, stresses
that Poppy funds must be held
in trust. They are held in a bank
account separate from that of
the branch general funds and
cannot be used for any purpose
other than those stipulated.
The Poppy Campaign com-
mences October 31, 2014. The
town of Clinton door to door
canvassing will take place
November 2, 2014 after church
service. The community of Bay-
field will have poppy boxes at
various businesses.

The council table in Central
Huron won't look too differ-
ent after the October 27
municipal election.
Mayor Jim Ginn and Dep-
uty Mayor Dave Jewitt had
been acclaimed after running
unopposed.
Five of the incumbent
councillors, Marg Anderson,
Danny Colquhoun, Alex
Westerhout (East Ward) and
Burkhard Metzger and Alison
Lobb (West Ward) were all
reelected.
Joining council is Genny
Smith, who replaces Brian
Barnim in the West Ward.
Only 29% of voters in Cen-
tral Huron voted.
Mayor Ginn said he was
somewhat disappointed with
the voter turnout.
He said with seven of the
eight councillors coming back
they will be able to get back
into the swing of things rather
quickly.
