Charge radicals
with treason
Canadians are asking
how the next round of
terror attacks on our
soil can be prevented.
Sadly, due to the nature of
"microterrorism," we can
expect more militants to
draw blood as we witnessed
last week. Our military and
police can only do so much
to contain it.
Now the conversation is
moving towards what new
laws we can pass.
We're not so sure we need
new laws - we just need to
use the laws we have on the
books. Vigorously.
Last Monday a CSIS
director speaking at a Sen-
ate committee explained
that they don't have the
resources to track all terror-
ist sympathizers.
We also learned a couple
weeks ago that the RCMP
had around 63 investiga-
tions into 90 suspected
extremists who have
returned from abroad or
are planning to go overseas
and haven't done so yet.
Here's a suggestion: charge
them with the laws they're
currently breaking.
Charge them with treason.
The Islamic State has
instructed its followers to kill
Canadians.
"Kill the disbeliever
whether he is civilian or
military, for they have the
same ruling," Abu
Muhammad Al-Adnani
said in a recording.
So the Islamic State has
declared war on us.
Some of our countrymen
are pathetically heeding
this call. In April, Calgary
man Farah Shirdon
Mohamed made a video-
tape of himself burning his
passport while proclaim-
ing, "We are coming and we
will destroy you."
Sounds pretty treasonous
to us. Disagree? Take a look
at the law.
Section 46 of the Crimi-
nal Code of Canada out-
lines what counts as high
treason: "levies war
against Canada or does
any act preparatory
thereto" or "assists an
enemy at war with Can-
ada, or any armed forces
against whom Canadian
Forces are engaged in hos-
tilities, whether or not a
state of war exists between
Canada and the country
whose forces they are."
This can come with a sen-
tence of life in prison. And
hopefully in this case life
means life and they throw
away the key.
The Islamic State is call-
ing for assaults on Canadi-
ans. Anyone who has gone
abroad to train with the
Islamic State has assisted
an enemy that is expressly
intent on killing our
citizens.
They should be rounded
up and charged as the crimi-
nals they are.
An emotional response

If you are a fan of Jian Gho-
meshi and the CBC radio
show that he used to host,
Q, the past week and a half has
probably been difficult for you.
I was a very large fan of the
show and so to witness the
whole debacle recently has
been hard. Am I still a fan of
Ghomeshi? I'm not so sure
anymore. I suppose that this
will be determined in the com-
ing weeks and months.
It all started on October 26
when CBC announced that it
had severed ties with Gho-
meshi. CBC didn't say why
they were parting ways with
him in its initial announce-
ment but only that it was a
difficult decision.
Then on October 27 Gho-
meshi filed a 55 million dollar
lawsuit against the corpora-
tion. The lawsuit claims that
CBC fired Ghomeshi for
unbecoming behavior and
because he practiced rough
sex. While Ghomeshi admit-
ted that he indeed practices
rough sex, he insisted that the
women involved always con-
sented to it.
Then, in the days following
these events, numerous
women from across Canada
have put forth allegations
that state that Ghomeshi hit,
choked and beat them. More
importantly, they all state
that their involvement was
not consensual.
I will admit that I was one of
the many Canadians who
responded with a knee-jerk
reaction. I responded emo-
tionally and defended Gho-
meshi at once.
But how could I not have? I,
like thousands of others, have
adored the broadcaster for over
a decade now. His sensitive,
insightful and introspective
nature, sharp intellect and
superb interviewing skills are
just a few qualities that for so
long placed him in a league all
of his own. I couldn't for a sec-
ond imagine that he was capa-
ble of sexually harassing and
abusing women.
In addition to immediately
defending Ghomeshi, I also
immediately attacked CBC. I
thought, how dare they? How
could such an esteemed
agency act so shortsighted and
puritan in today's day and age?
In fact, this column origi-
nally contained very different
content and took on a very
different tone when I first
began to write it.
However, as the accusations
continue to mount from more
and more seemingly respecta-
ble and educated women, I
have begun to back off of my,
at first, unconditional support
of Ghomeshi.
These very serious allega-
tions are making me rethink
your sincerity, Jian Ghomeshi,
and this is something that I
surely never thought that I
would say. While my heart is
still telling me that you're
innocent, my mind is telling
me the opposite because it
knows that even a gentle
nature such as your own likely
cannot negate these kinds of
powerful testimonies.
