The Clinton News Record
There is a large popula-
tion of bald eagles in the
area and there are many
people who care greatly
about them. Those at the
Hullett Provincial Wildlife
Area, Salthaven Wildlife
Rehabilitation & Education
Centre, Ministry of Natural
Resources and one local
wildlife photographer are
just some of those people
who are committed to
ensuring their wellbeing.
This past Spring an eagle
nest holding two young
bald eaglets who were not
yet ready to fly fell out of a
local tree. Unfortunately,
the search party could only
find one of the eaglets. It is
believed that coyotes got to
the second nest mate.
This is where the sad
story ends, though, and a
happy story begins.
Shortly after the one
eaglet was found, namely, a
large, female eagle who was
given the name, Hennykins,
she was taken to Salthaven
Wildlife Rehabilitation &
Education Centre in Mount
Brydges. Hennykins was at
the centre all summer and
while she was there the
centre taught her the skills
she would need to survive
in the wild, such as, flying
and hunting skills.
Then on October 25 Hen-
nykins was released into
the wild. The release took
place at the Hullett Provin-
cial Wildlife Area in Clinton
which currently has an
active bald eagle's nest as
well as a very large eagle
population nearby. Around
Ilam that day Hennykins
was placed in a tree and
spent a couple of hours col-
lecting herself, later that
evening she was seen mov-
ing down the river and the
next day she was nowhere
to be found. As those who
were involved in the release
state, everything went as
planned and, overall, the
release was a success.
Given the large popula-
tion of eagles in the area,
the prospects of survival
are very good for Hen-
nykins and her chances of
integration are, thankfully,
thought to be very high.
Numerous people attended the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area on October 25 to witness Hennykins'
much anticipated release.
