Blyth Festival something we should all treasure; artistic director
Dave Flaherty
Goderich Signal Star
The 40th anniversary of the Blyth
Festival is something that everyone in
the community should be proud of.
This was the message delivered by
Marion de Vries, artistic director of the
festival as she spoke to members of the
Goderich Rotary Club on May 13.
"The festival's 40th anniversary is a
very significant accomplishment,"
she said.
de Vries said at a recent Profes-
sional Association of Canadian Thea-
tres (PACT) conference she was asked
several times how the Blyth Festival
could survive "40 years in a 440 -seat
theatre."
"It's because of our loyal commu-
nity, audience, partners and spon-
sors," she stated.
She shared an anecdote about the
festival's first season.
They ran two shows, Mostly in Clo-
ver, which featured a local story, and
Mousetrap, an older, more well
known show at the time.

Bible Study Wednesday 7:30 PM
"From then on, the man-
date they would have
would be to share the sto-
ries, challenges, issues and
history of Huron County
and its people."
"This is a really special
mandate, and that is why
Blyth Festival has lasted so
long," she said. "It makes it
unique to Huron County,
but still draws people from
all over Canada and North
America."
"It's something we really
can be proud of," she said.
According to de Vries, a
recent study performed by
Nanos Research indicated
that 80% of those polled
believe live theatre is impor-
tant to communities and
two-thirds believe live thea-
tre helps to attract businesses
to a community.
"This is something we've
known for a long time," de
Vries said.
De Vries said while there
are many strong supporters
of the festival, there are
also those who are not
aware of them.
"It's time to share what
we have in Huron County.
It's time to start sharing our
treasure. Come check it
out," she said.
She said live theatre has
the ability to make people
think and feel, or to maybe
even "see something in
yourself or your commu-
nity you haven't seen
before."
Beyond this, she said, "It
really gives you a good
laugh."

Made in Huron Artists and
Market on the move July 1
Made in Huron Artists
and Market will be on the
move July 1.
The local business, which
allows space for local artists,
artisans and businesses
space to display their prod-
ucts, will move from its cur-
rent location of 38 Albert St.
in Clinton to the old Groves
Appliances building at the
corner of Huron Rd. and
Hwy. 4.
"We've been at this loca-
tion 11 years and we've out-
grown our space," said
Sandy Garnet of Sassy
Stitches, one of the vendors
that rent space out at Made
in Huron Artists and
Market.
Garnet estimated they
have between 25 to 35 ven-
dors who use the space.
At the new location, they
will have 2,200 square feet,
roughly triple the size, Gar-
net said.
She said renovations to
the new location will per-
formed during the month of
June and it will open offi-
cially July 2 (July 1 being
Canada Day).
Although the current spot
yields a lot of "foot traffic",
Garnet said they do not have
any parking in front.
"There will a more travel-
ers that will see us on Huron
Rd. (Hwy. 8), and the park-
ing lot is right beside the
store," she said.
Garnet said they will be
renting the building from
the former owner.
