Sexual assault is a problem that
no community is immune to
Huron Women's
Shelter launching
articles in
conjunction with
Sexual Assault
Awareness Month
Special to the News Record
In an effort to raise awareness and
encourage healing amongst victims of
sexual assault, the Huron Women's
Shelter will be launching a series of arti-
cles this May in conjunction with Sex-
ual Assault Awareness Month.
The articles are intended to educate
people on the various forms of sexual
assault and abuse that can occur and
local services that are available to help
promote self -healing and moving
forward.
Blanche Savage has worked as the
sexual assault counsellor for over 20
years in Huron County.
She has met and worked with count-
less victims recognizing that sexual
assault is a universal problem that
Huron County is not immune to.
She has worked with victims as young
as 16 and as old as 84. Some have been
married, some have been successful
career women, and some have lived a
life paralyzed by the repercussions of a
sexual assault.
Every case is different.
The majority of her clientele experi-
enced sexual abuse as children. Many
find their way to Blanche when an
occurrence later in their life triggers an
overwhelming feeling of distress from
memories of abuse; for instance, a child
of theirs may have reached the age at
which the client first experienced sex-
ual abuse, the client may have entered a
new intimate relationship, or perhaps
the client is experiencing sexual assault
once again in their life.
At the beginning, many clients are
very hesitant to work with Blanche and
share their story. They are worried
about confidentiality in a small town
and often associate shamefulness to the
actions that were done to them, despite
it being totally out of their control.
Blanche Is committed to protecting
the confidentiality of the women she
works with. She works out of various
safe meeting places in Huron County.
She has no specific requirements
related to scheduling appointments.
She encourages that women share their
story at their own pace and she does
not expect that they commit to regular
meetings, unless that is what they
want.
Her mandate is simple; she wants to
help women achieve, as much as pos-
sible, an attitude of self-worth, a sense
of control, and the skills they need to
make self- caring choices. She is
focused on healing, and never
judgment.
What she does is never simple, and
every story is individually complex but
she has seen many clients, despite ter-
rible wounding, come to a point where
they are able to live life according to
their own good values and enjoy posi-
tive relationships.
Even in the presence of deep trauma,
Blanche instills hope and supports
healing.
The Huron Women's Shelter offers
individual and group counselling to any
woman that is a victim of sexual assault,
a term that refers to any and all forms of
unwanted sexual contact, including
simple touching and violent attacks.
Services offered are intended to sup-
port a process of self -healing.
Many victims who have experienced
or are experiencing sexual assault strug-
gle with psychological, physiological,
and behavioural consequences. It can
be very difficult to move forward from
such a traumatic experience, however,
healing is possible and does occur. Vic-
tims are encouraged to seek out help
regardless of when the sexual assault
occurred.
It can take several years for a victim
of sexual assault to feel comfortable
talking about the experience, and it is
not uncommon for people to wait dec-
ades before they are ready to explore
healing opportunities.
Counsellors help victims establish
real safety and a sense of safety while
also providing tools for managing a
sense of being emotionally over-
whelmed and support in moving for-
ward from the past.
Adult victims are never forced to
report any actions committed to them
to the police. Anyone can self -refer to
services offered and all programming
provided by the Huron Women's Shel-
ter is free of charge.
