Kincardine's Jan Johnstone to
represent Huron -Bruce NDP in
June 12 election
Huron -Bruce's NDP candidate is not
lacking any confidence.
"We are going to win, I am going to
win," said Kincardine resident Jan John-
stone while addressing her fellow NDPers
after being announced as the local can-
didate in the June 12 provincial election.
Johnstone defeated Willi Laurie in a
vote held at the Huron County Museum
in Goderich on Thurs., May 8.
She spoke very highly of Laurie, calling
her a "great candidate."
Johnstone said she sees herself as the
only "progressive" choice for voters in
Huron -Bruce.
To her, Liberal candidate Colleen
Schenk, who ran for the federal Progres-
sive Conservative Party in 1997, is a
"blue" disguised as a "red'
"The Liberals adopt NDP values, then
run on a conservative agenda," Johnstone
said.
Johnstone, who also ran in the 1997
federal election for the NDP, said she
feels she has developed trust with the
community through her work as a trus-
tee and former chair with the Bluewater
District School Board.
"People have trust that I will act on
promises and I have listened well," John-
stone said.
She said the NDP will help small busi-
nesses through a tax credit and also look
at raising the minimum wage.
Johnstone stressed the need to put the
"OPG back together" and put a stop to
increasing hydro rates.
A burning issue with local residents
will be wind energy - Johnstone said her

party believes local municipalities should
be given the choice whether they want
wind energy projects in their community
and also should decide factors such as
location and setbacks.
Speaking on the cancelled gas plants
that cost $1.1 billion, Johnstone said the
Liberals have had "scandal after scandal"
and it's time to replace the old guard.
Her strategy is to get to the doorsteps
of voters and "talk about the issues."
Huron -Bruce NDP Riding Association
president John Rich said their office
would be located at 851 Queen St. in
Kincardine.
Rich said while the party usually has
strong results in areas of Huron County,
they would like to make gains in Port
Elgin, Southampton, Saugeen Shores
and Kincardine.

The Purple
Peony a new
family store
in Bayfield

Meet the owner of The Purple
Peony of Bayfield, the store for
babies, children and families
Originally from Toronto, Cheri
Shaver has lived in Perth County
for the past 24 years, spending
much of the last five years in Bay-
field and area. She has had sev-
eral small businesses in the past,
including "No. 6 School House
Gift Shoppe" near Exeter, and was
co-owner of "The Millrace Java
Pub" in St. Marys. Two of Cheri's
favourite jobs were when she was
"The Story Time Lady" at The St.
Marys Public Library, and when
she had a small daycare so she
could stay at home with her
young daughters.
Shaver had been looking for a
business in Bayfield for several
years as she had "fallen in love
with the entire area."
It was early this spring when it
all came together and the idea of
a baby and children's store
emerged as she realized there are
very few products for the younger
family members that visit Bay-
field and that local families were
driving a distance to buy anything
for kids. She also carries games
for the whole family to play
together.
The Purple Peony carries a
unique assortment of clothing,
Cheri Shaver at The Purple Peony of Bayfield
toys, hand painted furniture and
home decor that would enhance
any room of the house.
Stratford artist, Dawna Robert-
son's work is beautiful, hand
painted vintage furniture, cradles,
desks, toy boxes and more. She
uses non- toxic chalk paint to cre-
ate inspirational and whimsical
pieces. Her work is inspired by
nature and the love for her
daughter.
"The first of line clothing I
selected was Electrik Kidz, a
Canadian company that designs
a fun and edgy line of baby
clothes. So far my favourite pieces
are selling verywell. One is a mer-
maid baby gown and one is a
shark. Very cute!" said Shaver.
Another Canadian company
supplies The Purple Peony with
bamboo fabric swaddling blan-
kets and clothing, Babibu.
"Bamboo fabric is not only eco -
friendly but is hypo -allergenic,
anti -bacterial and naturally wicks
moisture away from the babies
body keeping them comfortable
in all kinds of temperatures. It is
soft and easily cared for."
Canadian hand made wooden
toys and old fashioned train whis-
tles are scattered throughout the
store. And another Canadian line
of fashionable baby slings is
draped on a repainted old
wooden ladder. Toys and games
for older children and the entire
family sit on shelves placed on a
wall that is, of course, purple.
If you go:
Located in the courtyard at
19 Main St. N. in Bayfield, The
Purple Peony opened May 1st
and will have its Grand Open-
ing on Saturday May 17th.
