Steve Cooke was given a send-
off fit for a chief.
Cooke, who served with the
Central Huron fire department
for 32 years, retired as fire Chief
on April 30.
The department held a special
retirement ceremony for Cooke
on May 10.
Surrounded by colleagues,
family, friends and community
members, Cooke said he was
"overwhelmed:'
"All the recognition I've got
has been super," Cooke said.
"Don't know if I deserve it but I
appreciate it all."
Interim Chief Dave Renner
said Cooke not only led the Cen-
tral Huron department but also
helped other departments when
they were in need.
Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn
thanked Cooke for his service,
and said he often hears about
the amazing service firefighters
provide and how they put their
lives in danger every time they did
their job.
Central Huron firefighter Paul
Handy presented Cooke a special
fire extinguisher with a picture of
him on it with the word "retired':
"Everyone knows `Cookie' and
what he means to us," Handy said.
Marty Bedard, Huron East fire
Chief, said, "We'd like to thank Steve
for a wonderful career and wish him
all the best in his retirement."
At the end of the ceremony,
Cooke took one last ride in the fire
truck while his colleagues saluted
him.
