The letter that never was,
and the reason why
Aswhile back, I received a
letter to the editor that
till bothers me to this
day, even though you never
read it and never will.
I feel I need to mention it
now, because of the situation
in Uganda, where it is now
illegal and life threatening to
be gay.
The letter I received called
trans -gendered people per-
verts, implying among other
things that they could not be
trusted around children in
washrooms.
My first instinct was to run
it and let readers judge for
themselves.
But, my name is on the
masthead and I didn't want
anybody thinking I in any
way condoned what was said.
These are opinion pages, but

even opinions need to be
grounded in some sort of
fact.
Since I took over here at the
News -Record I know I made
some unpopular choices, but,
I take my lumps for that per-
sonally and personally, I
don't care if I'm all that
popular.
In that spirit, I'm going to
instill my very first rule here,
and it will last as long as I
have ink on my hands:
If anybody writes in with
bigotry, racism, hate or any
other garbage that misuses
morality as a weapon - I will
cut it.
Ignorance I can handle to a
point - sometimes you just
have to give a person enough
rope. I have enough of it and
to spare myself. But, like the
letter I decided to cut, I can't
abide by shallow judgments
made from people who have
only ever walked in their own
shoes.
Is it any wonder, with insid-
ious poison like that, that we
have young people commit-
ting suicide because they
have life -changing questions
they are too afraid to ask?
I don't think perversion has
anything to do with gender.
Obsessing about what other
people do with their genitals,
however, is.
War, famine, poverty, greed
- these are serious problems
that need addressing. They
affect every flavour humanity
has to offer and require a col-
lective effort to truly make
this world a better place.
Gender only affects - at least
it should only affect - the per-
son it belongs to.
So again, I'm going to
repeat my rule:
If anybody writes in with
bigotry, racism, hate or any
other garbage that misuses
morality as a weapon - I will
cut it.
Don't waste your time or
mine.
Let's use this as a reminder
to question our own morals
before we question those of
people we don't understand.
