Veteran back to see old friends, pitch program to CBC

dent Rolf Montieth.
Montieth, a member of
the Royal Navy during the
Second World War, was
back in Canada with an
important mission - pro-
mote the Battle of the Atlan-
tic and give it its proper
place in history.
He is very passionate
about the subject, and as he
spoke Sunday, he noted
while the Battle of Britain

World War, it was never
more than a side show to
the main event - the con-
quering of France and the
eastward push into Russia.
Released German docu-
ments highlight this fact, he
said, adding what really
turned the war in favour of
the allies was the struggle
for the Atlantic, containing
the German U-boats and
controlling shipping and
supply lines.
Montieth traveled to
Toronto this past Monday
to speak to representatives
at the CBC to pitch a televi-
sion program commemo-
rating the Battle of the
Atlantic. Ideally it will be
part of the 100 -year anni-
versary of the battle in Hali-
fax in 2017. The response
was favourable.
"I want a simple program
to tell the truth about the
Battle of the Atlantic," he
said. "Something for the
ordinary citizen."
He tried to get a one-hour
program dedicated to the
battle in Britain in May, but
was unsuccessful. Back in
Canada, he said he wanted
to resurrect his campaign.
Montieth attended high
school in Clinton, and
many old chums were at
the small gathering at
Huronview. Montieth had
many stories to tell from the
Great Wars, including how
he became a Hero First-
