Dr. Kim Blok
Dr. Kimberley Blok first started her business in 2009 out of her
Egmondville home, and less than one year later, moved to 53
Main Street to bigger offices thanks to an expanding patient
base and number of services offered.
Optimal Health & Chiropractic is a multidisciplinary clinic with
two RMTs, a naturopathic doctor, bodytalk practitioner and a
holistic nutritionist and BIE practitioner. Optimal Health also
offers laser therapy and custom orthotics.
Blok says she has had a great support network that helped her
meet the challenges of opening her business, be it renovating,
securing finances, and learning to be assertive in the world of
business. As the economy changes, she says more people are
actually seeking out chiropractic care to keep them healthy.
At the same time, she notes more businesses are finding that
investing in employee health increases productivity and decreases time lost to injury.
Self-employment brings the benefit of being able to set your own hours, something Blok
says makes life much easier with a young family. "We have an amazing support system
with family and friends that we're lucky to have so close by that allows me to work, be a
mom and still play!" she says. The chiropractic clinic is open Monday 8-12 and 2-5:30,
Tuesday 3-7 p.m. Thursday 9-12:30 and 2-5:30 and Fridays from 8-12:30.

My family is very important to me and it's great to be able to work with my mom
and dad and have my family involved in the business. "We've been talking
about doing this for quite a few years," says Mandie, adding the restaurant isn't
just solo effort, but a family affair. "My dad is the fix -it guy, my mom does the
accounting and I'mthe one that runs it." After spending summers at their trailer
in Goderich, Mandie and her family decided to move from Kitchener to Kinbum
this past June, while her parents relocated to Goderich permanently after Ted
retired. DD's menu will feature a variety of dishes covering breakfast, lunch and
dinner. Weekly specials will be featured, as well as a family -friendly atmosphere
which the Fords' hope will help meet the needs of Seaforth residents young
and old. "There's no nice, sit down family restaurant in this town. "You have to
go out of town to do that and you shouldn't have to. You should be able to have
little place in town to sit down, relax, and have a good meal. "I am big-time
Mandie Ford for kids and community. When I lived in Kitchener, I ran my own daycare and
volunteered with my daughter's school, the arena and the community centre,"
she explained. "My whole time spent was with the neighbourhood kids, and I hope to become involved here
as well." In fact, it was the kids at her daycare who gave Mandie the inspiration to call the place DD's, when her
whole name proved too hard for the little ones to pronounce. "But if you ask my mom, it stands for Dad and
Daughter," With the house rule of everything's fresh and everything's homemade, DD's hopes residents come
for the food, but stay for the fellowship. "We're new to this area and we want people to know this is not a fancy
restaurant, they can come here and it's like a big family," said Mandie. "I'm all about learning everybody's names
and that's what you get called when you walk through the door. It's a warm, comfortable place where you can
have a meal, bring your kids, it's just one of those things."

Patti Hendriks
What started out 24 years ago, when Patti Hendriks began hand
making teddy bears is now one of Seaforth's newest storefronts.
But Primitive Creek isn't a new business. It has existed for seven
years, in the form of four open houses per year at Hendriks' farm.
But on May 18, 2012, Patti opened her main street store.
The original idea to start Primitive Creek struck Hendriks on a
shopping trip to the U.S. where she found vendors selling lots of
unique colonial decor and asked why they weren't selling across
the border. When they were hesitant, she asked them to sell their
products to her. The name of the store combines primitive, the
type of decor she is offering and creek because her farm has a
creek, which runs through it. By the time she got back, she had her
whole store imagined in her head.
Patti feels her great staff of family and friends are a huge part of
Primitive Creek's success. Because they are all involved in the
shopping, hauling, pricing and decorating, when called upon by a customer they have a more
intimate knowledge of our product. In moving to Main Street, part of Patti's strategy is making
sure that she's offering different products to her customers than the other stores in Seaforth.
"There's no sense having, repetition in a small town, so hopefully by offering something different
it will benefit us all," she said. Her favourite part of owning a store is doing the shopping. The
new store offers her the opportunity to shop for more unique colonial items, whereas before a
lot of the product she carried was seasonal.
