surpassed it by $18,000," said Executive -Director Ryan Erb. "The
campaign grew in both counties this year, Huron and Perth:'
The overall goal this year was $1,115,000. Last year, the United
Way raised $1,082,651.
This year's campaign team put a strong focus on the top -20
workplace accounts this year, with notable increases from Sifto
Salt, Stratford Festival and the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance
employees.
Erb said much of the credit falls to campaign co-chairs Ron
Shaw and Wayne Smith for reaching out to donors and encour-
aging them to support the United Way.
The final decision for the allocation of funds takes place later
this month, and the additional funds means the United Way is
able to give a little bit more this year. Applications for funding
were submitted in the fall of 2013.
"We are certainly helping as many as we did last year," Erb
said. "The biggest thing is maybe we are able to give a bit more
Meanwhile, the United Way Social Research and Planning
Council will be taking on a quality of life report, which will be
released in the summer. The report is done every four years
when the most recent census information is available. They just
wrapped up a report on volunteerism in the two counties.
Raceway improvements
coming for 2014 season
The Clinton Raceway will be getting some improve-
ments this season.
Council Dan Colquhoun informed council March 3
about $330,000 in improvements to the racetrack. Work to
be done includes paving and painting the parking lot,
washrooms, work on the judges stand, roof and betting
area in addition to 2-3 rows of bucket seats.
Colquhoun explained that the raceway board will be
footing the bill for the work, though their only concern
would be additional engineering costs.
The proximity of the slots was council's main concern.
Paving the lot could make a cramped situation if a private
entity takes over management of the facility later in the
year.
Colquhoun noted that concern has been discussed by
the raceway board, and that the paving could be put off
until later, when plans are known.
