Williams still know the power of love

True love is something a person can
spend a lifetime searching for.
Sometimes, though, it happens
purely by accident.
After 48 years of marriage, Olive
and Cyril Williams decided to renew
their wedding vows on their anniver-
sary March 3.
Cyril is a resident at Huronview and
Olive lives at home. The ceremony
was performed at Huronview and cel-
ebrated by many of the residents,
whom Cyril has come to think of as a
second family.
The Williams met up in 1965 at
Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Mani-
toba. Olive was a nurses aide, Cyril an
orderly.
On the day they first met, Olive was
just coming out of a room with a tray
of sterilized thermometers. Cyril was
barreling around the corner. They col-
lided and Olive and the thermometers
were sent flying. She landed in the
laundry hamper. The thermometers
were all shattered.
But, as Cyril helped Olive up out of
the hamper, he set in motion more
than 48 years of happiness together,
asking her out on New Years Eve,
1965. They were seeing each other
every day soon after and on Valen-
tine's Day 1966 Cyril popped the big
question.
Say what you mean.
Tell her every day you love
her. Don't miss one day.
It only takes a second."

Less than three weeks later, the two
eloped to Toronto and were married
on a rainy night in March.
Since then, their family has

Council decides to back Munro study
Gerard Creces
Clinton News -Record
After a tie vote killed the
idea at Committee of the
Whole in February, Central
Huron revisited the Alice
Munro study at their regular
council meeting Monday,
March 3.
The majority of council
thought the $15,000 price
tag for participating may
have been a little high, but if
Central Huron chose not to
participate now, they'd be
left out of any further
action.
"This is going to go ahead
with or without us," said
Coun. Alex Westerhout. "If
we don't participate we will
be shut out."
Coun. Brian Barnim again
expressed his opinion that
the matter should be dealt
with at the county level
alone, as it has the potential
to benefit all nine lower tier
municipalities. Either ask
everyone to chip in or leave
it all to the county, he said.
The three municipalities
targeted in the study have all
been part of the physical life
of Munro, and the settings for her stories are still
very much recognizable.
"In her books you can pinpoint exactly where
those areas are," said CAO Peggy VanMierlo-
West.
In expressing his support for the study project,
Deputy -Mayor Dave Jewitt said having a home-
grown Nobel Prize recipient - and the first Cana-
dian women to do so - is an accomplishment that
needs to be celebrated.
"It's never going to happen again," he said.
"You're only the first once."
Councilors Barnim and Dan Colquhoun
opposed the funding, with Couns Alison Lobb,
Marg Anderson, Westerhout, Jewitt and Mayor
Jim Ginn supporting it. Coun. Burkhard Metzger
was away for the meeting.
grandchildren and one great-grand-
child on the way. The secret to their
success is surprisingly simple.
Love is something that requires
work and dedication, and something
that leads to lifelong happiness.
"Say what you mean," Cyril said.
"Tell her every day you love her. Don't
miss one day. It only takes a second."
"If you get into problems, talk it out
rather than separate or divorce," Olive
added. "Especially with children."
The Williams love for each other has
never diminished. Olive said Cyril is
the love of her life and the best thing
that ever happened to her. She fell for
him because he is funny, compassion-
ate and gentle.
"I sometimes call him my gentle
giant," she said.
"I call her my 011ie," Cyril added.
"Sometimes I'm her Popeye."
About 40-50 residents enjoyed a
small reception at Huronview follow-
ing the service in the chapel. As the
two renewed their vows, it served not
only as a way of reaffirming a lifelong
love, but inspiration for anyone who
has ever loved before.
