Protect yourself from Writer ashamed by lack of
financial fraud council support for Munro
Dear editor:
Every year, millions of Canadians
are targeted by fraud regardless of
their age, education level, income,
profession or ethnicity. March is
Fraud Protection Month in Canada
and the Financial Consumer Agency
of Canada (FCAC) is joining the Com-
petition Bureau and several other
organizations in raising awareness
about the issue of fraud. It's an ideal
time for Canadians to find out how to
recognize, prevent and report fraud
should they become a victim.
It's easy to fall for a financial scam.
Criminals use creative tactics to catch
potential victims at different stages of
their lives. Whether you are starting
your first job, moving out on your
own, maintaining a home or living in
retirement, be mindful of the poten-
tial scams that could target you. Pro-
tect your assets, property and identity
by recognizing and reporting the
warning signs to the proper authori-
ties and by visiting itpaystoknow.

Lucie Tedesco
Commissioner
Financial Consumer Agency of Canada
Dear editor:
As a native of Clinton (Londesborough), I am
angry and deeply ashamed that some members
of Clinton Council have voted "No" on an
opportunity to celebrate the incredible success
of Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro-- a local and
now internationally -decorated author who has
lived in this town for many years.
One alternate suggestion was installing a
nice plaque in the library. A plaque? Really? We
probably hand out bigger trophies to novice
soccer players who finally figure out which
direction to run!
While I recognize that small town councils
have financial constraints, I am certain that,
given a little creativity and willingness, some
solution can be reached that would enable
Central Huron to take part in recognizing Ms.
Munro's vast achievements.
How often will we be able to say that a Nobel
Prize winner lived and wrote here? It's kind of a
big deal. Let's get on board.

Change is coming, but not what Wynne intended
Dear editor:
Kathleen Wynne had her butt handed
to her in the by-elections for Niagara and
Thornhill. The Liberals managed only 18
per cent of the vote but Wynne was quick
to respond to detractors that, "I know
people are looking for change in this
province. I am that change?'
Well, Ms. Wynne you are delusional.
Nothing has changed in good old Liberal
Ontario. Hell, just before the by-elec-
tions she threw $75 million at a program
to boost the wine industry and $26 mil-
lion for a hospital in Niagara. Then there
is the wasteful cost of $2 million or so to
have the by-elections in the first place
when we are most likely headed to a full
provincial election in March or April.
Since Wynne's ascent to the Liberal
throne we have seen her throw $400 mil-
lion at the horse racing industry to fix
(maybe) a problem created when the
Liberals cancelled the slots at racetrack
program. We found out the divestment of
the ONTC is going to cost taxpayers $820
million instead of saving money so now
the liberals are looking for ways to
restructure the crown company. She
handed the OPP a 8.55 per cent pay
increase at a time when other workers
are being held to two per cent, causing
serious financial problems for
municipalities.
At a time of financial restraint she
handed $21 million in bonuses to
Ontario's Public Service managers and
bonuses of up to $1.3 million to Ontario
Power execs. Now we find out that
Ontario lost $1.2 billion exporting power
in 2013.The development of the Ring of
Fire and the potential economic boom
for Ontario has been put on hold. Now
she wants to add a 10 -cent a litre tax to
gasoline to increase the cost of every-
thing and just for good measure create
an Ontario pension plan and pay for it
with a payroll tax.
Enough is enough. Ontario was once
an economic leader in Canada. We now
have the second worst welfare record of
any of the Canadian provinces. The cost
of doing business (transportation, regu-
lation, power) has driven industry away.
I have had enough of the ineptitude with
which these liberals have handled
Ontario. I do not say "governed" Ontario,
because to govern suggests an intelligent
effort to plan or strategy to move ahead
and that is nowhere evident in the policy
of Ms. Wynne or her Liberal lackeys. Call
an election Ms. Wynne and allow the
people of Ontario to show how much
they appreciate you.
Gaye Smith,
Paisley
