Bayfield arena group makes pitch to Bluewater Council

The Bayfield Arena Community Partners
are taking their case to Bluewater Council
once again, offering to take on the task of cre-
ating a management board to save the ice
surface.
The BACP was before council Monday
night, hoping to get their approval of the plan
to strike the management board and find
community partners and volunteers.
The group hopes to attract service clubs
and members of the Bayfield community to
the cause, which will rely heavily on volun-
teer support. One of the first acts of business
will be to conduct a user study to see where
the demand for the arena is, not just for
hockey and figure skating season, but year-
round.
Part of the reason for the arena's underuse
is due to the lack of promotion for the facility,
noted BACP Chair Ron Keys.
"The facility has never been marketed," he
said. "We feel there really is potential not just
with the ice in winter but the other seven
months of the year:'
In the short term, the study will be looking
at attracting things like trade shows and other
events to make use of the arena in the off-
season, with the long-term goal of upgrading
the facility and securing capital funding.

Giving back
Clinton resident Mary Gibbings presented the Clinton Public Hospital with the
gift of two geriatric chairs this past week, in memory of her late husband, Ken.
Gibbings said she wanted to give back to the hospital because of the excellent
care her husband received while at the CPH, and that it is important to support
local health care and keep it in the community. Accepting on behalf of the CPH
Foundation is chair, Darren Stevenson.
Keys noted there are many ideas already
on how capital funds can be spent - the first
thing being a new roof for the arena. New
dressing rooms, curtains and even a remov-
able flooring system are all possibilities as
well.
However, the first step is to get council and
the community on the same page. Already
the BACP is talking to as many businesses,
residents and service clubs as they can to
gain support and put pressure on council to
reverse their decision to close the ice pad
after this season is done.
"The support has been overwhelming," Key
said. The hard part of it all is waiting on the
political process. "We really haven't been

given any authority to do anything. It's hard
to jump on the bandwagon of a group that is
voicing what the community wants but has
never been sanctioned by council."
The group took a three -pronged approach
to their presentation Monday - giving a brief
history of the arena; asking council to rescind
their previous decision and offering to step
up and become the board of directors the
arena sorely needs.
"We're cautiously optimistic," Keys said.
"At the last council meeting it was put for-
ward this vote would take place at the next
meeting. The majority of council was quite
willing to do that"
