A local sister/brother team
is going cycling across Can-
ada for a good cause this
April.
Claire and Will Fleming are
looking to cover 7,650 kilo-
metres of Canadian roadway
between April and June, rais-
ing money for the Canadian
Tire Jumpstart program. The
goal is to raise one dollar for
every kilometre of the trip.
On April 13, the pair will be
setting off from Stanley Park
in Vancouver, British Colum-
bia, returning home by June
1.
"We always thought it
would be a cool thing to do,
but we never thought at this
point in our lives we'd be
doing it," said Claire in an
interview with the News -
Record. She said the trip
started out as a joke with her
brother, who is in his final year
of university at Western. "I
thought it would be fun to go
along, so here we are
The Grade 12 CHSS student
said she will be back just in
time for exams, though they
will have to hustle.
The pair are hoping to
cover about 175 kilometres
per day - or about six hours
on their bikes. With the bad
weather, Claire said their
training has been indoors at
this point, but that it has
been going very well.
As for the trip itself, the
Flemings will be paying all
their own expenses, so all
money raised will go directly
to the Jumpstart program.
Claire said they chose the
charity because it hits close
to home. Jumpstart raises
money for children who
can't afford organized sports
and activities.
"There are so many chari-
ties out there, but this was
one we could both relate to,"
Claire said. "We both played
sports and we know the
influence it has had on our
lives."They want to make sure
kids have the same opportu-
nities, she said.
The Flemings are already
more than one-third of the
way toward their fundraising
goal, with $2,600. People and
businesses can donate online
through a link at their blog,
which also has a map of the
Fleming's route, so people can
follow along.
Adding to the family aspect
of the trip, Claire said mom is
also going to be tagging along,
though she'll be riding in
comfort.
"Along the way - mom will
be coming along in an RV;" she
noted. "She will be able to
help with some of the cooking
and looking after food along
the way."
Their dad also hopes to be
able to make it for part of the

trip, she added.
Neither Claire nor Will is a seasoned
cyclist, something that surprises many
people when they learn about the sib-
lings' trip. However, they have been get-
ting many suggestions and bits of wisdom
from bicycle enthusiasts and others who
have made the cross -Canada trek before,
and Claire said one of the things she is
most looking forward to seeing are the
Rocky Mountains, which will also be one
of the most challenging parts of the ride.
It's a pretty straight route, she said. With
just 50 days between Will's exams and the
start of his internship, the direct route was
the most efficient option.
As word of their trip spreads, their fun-
draising efforts are building momentum.
And with just over a month to go, so too is
the excitement.
