Canada pcna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Letter to the Editor Appeal made to local residents to help facilitate Celtic Roots Festival attendees The Celtic Roots Festival is fast approaching and will be here before we know it. As you know it is one of the largest events in Goderich each sum- mer, attracting over ten thousand peo- ple. As a result, accommodations including campgrounds, hotels, motels and bed & breakfasts fill up quickly leaving many last minute visitors with- out a place to stay. Tourism Goderich is once again offering a solution and we are asking the citizens of Goderich and area for their help. If anyone has ever won- dered what it would be like to run a Bed & Breakfast, here is their opportunity. Anyone wishing to offer Bed & Breakfast accommodation during the Celtic College, August 4 to 8 and/or on the weekend of the Celtic Festival, August 8, 9, 10 is asked to come to the Tourist Information Centre, at the cor- ner of Hamilton and Victoria Streets (by the Dutch Fountain) as soon as possible and we will coordinate over- flow Bed & Breakfast accommodation. When they speak to us, they should be prepared to give us information about what they have to offer and rates. Our Travel Counsellors will be happy to assist them with this. So as not to offend established tour- ism operators, we will attempt to help fill the existing accommodations first, but we need to be informed when they are full. Our sources indicate that many are full already. We will then refer visi- tors to our Celtic Bed & Breakfast Program. This can only be accomplished if everyone works together. For more information about the Celtic Bed & Breakfast Program, please call us at 519-524-6600. Let's welcome our visitors to Goder- ich during the Celtic Roots Festival and, in fact all year long and let them know that we are not only Canada's Prettiest Town but the most hospitable. Thank you. The Maitland Valley Family Health Team is highlighting Senior's Health as a whole throughout June and July, and with that comes the recognition of some successful ongoing ser- vices as well as exciting new programs that focus on the total wellness for the aging population. Most recently, a Ministry of Health funded partnership between the MacKay Centre for Seniors and OneCare Home and Community Support Services was formed to offer fitness classes four days per week for those age fifty-five and over. A milder, arm -chair based exercise program called Ageless Grace joins a list of long-stand- ing services and social programs offered to area residents throughout the week at the Mac- Kay Centre in Goderich. At the core of philosophy and journalism lies a passion for clarity and truth As I was recently hired by The Clinton News Record to take on the roles and responsibilities of a reporter, I thought that I would introduce myself to you in this week's edition. At the outset, I will confess that I do not have a background in jour- nalism: pages and pages of articles, editorials and columns are not how I got the job. This may surprise you and you may be wondering what other background could possibly prepare one for this kind of career. The answer is philosophy, and I will from a bad article, and a good argu- make it my personal objective to ment from a bad argument, and, prove to the readers of this historic just as important as it is to ajoumal- and recognized newspaper why ist, seeking knowledge, or truth, is philosophers are naturally suited an essential quality (and some - for this job. And so herein lies my pledge to the citizens of Clinton and all of Huron County: so long as I have the privilege of holding this position of journalist with The Clinton News Record I will report my stories in an informa- tive and truthful manner. In addition, I will bring to you in my work what I refer to as the three C's: clarity, coherence and concision. These three things, I believe, are the hallmarks, not just of successful journalism, but of the critical thinking that can be acquired as a result of the pursuit of knowledge and truth, a pursuit whose value can, of course, never be underesti- mated.
