in MedLINCS program
On Monday, June 9,
Huron -Perth welcomed
three first year medical
students - Hannah Ernst
from London, Erin Wiley
who grew up in Clinton
and attended Central
Huron Secondary
School, and Scott Laing
from Stratford.
These students are
participating in The
MedLINCS - Medical
Learning in Community
Settings (formerly Med-
QUEST) Health Career
Exploration Program
which is a six-week sum-
mer clinical and teaching
elective for first and sec-
ond year students of
Schulich School of Medi-
cine & Dentistry at West-
ern University, as well as
Ontario medical students
who participated in Med-
QUEST when they were
in high school.
HealthKick is the
local community part-
ner that collaborates
with Schulich's Distrib-
uted Medical Education
(DME) to deliver the
program for our local
communities.
Unlike other programs
that take high school stu-
dents away from their
home environments,
MedLINCS is delivered
in the same communities
as the participating high
school students, and
many medical students,
call home - southwest-
ern Ontario.
The medical students
live, learn and work in
our communities for six
weeks ending July 18.
While here, the students
participate in observer -
ships with local physi-
cians and allied health
practitioners to learn
clinical skills and be
engaged in a rural prac-
tice environment. Some
of the locations they will
visit include: South
Huron Hospital Associa-
tion in Exeter, Grand
Bend Area Community
Health Centre, Clinton
Hospital and Clinton
Family Health Team,
Seaforth Hospital and
the Huron community
Family Health Team in
Seaforth, and Stratford
General Hospital.
The medical students
are joining the Health -
Kick project manager,
Laura Overholt, and
HealthKick summer pro-
grams leader, Becca
Simpson, who is from the
Kingsbridge area, and
entering her fourth year
of nursing at the Univer-
sity of Calgary. This team
will plan and implement
the local Huron Perth
MedLINCS Health
Career Exploration
Program.
The MedLINCS pro-
gram gives 25 high
school students from
across Huron and Perth
in Grades 10 and 11 the
opportunity to explore a
variety of healthcare
related fields that they
may wish to consider
pursuing at a post -sec-
ondary level. During the
five-day program, start-
ing July 7 to July 11, the
students participate in
activities directly
related to specific
healthcare professions
and have the opportu-
nity to meet with a vari-
ety of healthcare profes-
sionals and inquire
about their individual
occupations. The high
school students will also
have two half-day job
shadows where they can
experience firsthand
healthcare fields that
they may be interested
in. The job shadows that
the high school students
participate can include
professions such as
Dentistry, Nursing,
Diagnostic Imaging,
Dietitian, Medical Lab
Technology, Medicine
and much more.
