issues with families prior to
crises such as bankruptcy,
homelessness or agency
intervention.

vide non-judgemental and
relevant assistance, guid-

everything from the basics of
money management to the
"lost art" of home

Budget Buddies will be
trained, volunteer budget

The Budget Buddies Vol-
unteer Program will include
relevant and innovative
training, clear parameters,
on-going information, feed-
back and support so that
Budget Buddies become
effective and empathetic
advocates for those who are
struggling with financial and
household management
issues. Budget Buddies will
meet and work with an adult
family member in neutral
locations across the county
on an as -needed, mutually
agreeable schedule.
Program elements for
Budget Buddies will include
budgeting, creative savings,
banking and credit basics as
well as household manage-
ment skills that focus on
stretching limited resources
through information, collabo-
ration, practical skills -enhance-
ment, collective enterprise and
thrift. Budget Buddies will also
connect families with relevant
supports and provide timely
and appropriate referrals and
follow-ups.
Participants in Budget
Buddies will be individuals
and families struggling with
economic security and/or
financial literacy issues that
impact their ability to fully
engage in community life.
Individuals and families may
self -refer or be referred by
sister agencies.
Volunteers can choose to
work with one or more fami-
lies and/or assist with the
delivery of financial/eco-
nomic skills workshops. Vol-
unteers will be
trained and supported,
and we anticipate one family
per volunteer and
about 10 to 12 hours of
contact over a four to six
month period. We are
especially
seeking volunteers who
have patience, empathy, an
understanding of the
short and long-term
effects of poverty and a keen
sense of social justice.
Volunteer training will
consist of three two-hour
sessions that will be offered
several times over the sum-
mer months. We are aiming
to have this program fully
operational by September
2014. Applications are cur-
rently being accepted.
