Behind each and every survi- vor there is a story. The story of six-year-old Julia Ramsey of Bayfield began over four years ago when she acci- dentally swallowed a penny. Julia's mother Lori Carter said they took her to the emergency room in Clinton where several test were run. Soon, the doctor told the fam- ily they needed to go to the pedi- atric department in London. When they arrived, they still thought the issue was the swal- lowed penny. All of a sudden, a nurse came and took Julia away, and that's when they were told the news that just 18 months old, their daughter had been diagnosed with nephroblastoma com- monly known as a Wilms Tumor. She was immediately sched- uled for surgery to have the tumor and her left kidney removed. "It all happened in one day but we are lucky it was caught so early," Lori said. Her surgery was followed by 22 weeks of chemotherapy. On Apr. 21 of this year, Julia celebrated four years of being cancer free. Every year the family cele- brates another year Julia is can- cer free. Lori said the family now has a different outlook on life and "we don't take any day for granted." The Canadian Cancer Society provided support to the Carter - Ramsey family through its trans- portation program. There were many trips to Lon- don during her treatment period. "I can't even say what we would've done without the help," Lori said. Julia has participated in every Relay for Life since she was declared cancer free. "It's amazing to connect with other survivors," Lori said. At last year's event, Julia took the initiative to ask Denise Troyer, a fellow cancer survivor and someone she had never even met, if she wanted to walk the Survivor Lap with her. According to Lori, a year later the two still keep in touch and Julia sends Troyer video messages. "We are very thankful for all the support people give to Relay for Life," she said. These days, Lori said Julia is a very happy young girl, who loves to volunteer. She can often be seen at local blood donor clinics helping out. Julia and her family will once again be a part of Relay for Life this year in Goderich.
