World class hurdlers
need a combination of a
dancer's rhythm and
sprinter's speed. These
attributes don't just hap-
pen, they are the product
of endless hours of work
and repetition.
Lexi Aitken of Clinton
has been doing the work
since before Grade 9 at
St. Anne's Catholic sec-
ondary school.
It has paid off.
Aitken, now a 16 -year-
old Grade 11 student, has
been selected to repre-
sent Canada at the 2014
Youth Olympic Games
this summer in Nanjing,
China.
Aitken is the only
Canadian athlete
selected so far by the
IAAF and Athletics Can-
ada to join the Americas
team (North and South)
going to China.
Hurdles is a difficult
event that needs "co-
ordination, to be able to
have the fast quickness of
the sprint, but then you
have to be able to hurdle
at the same time," Aitken
said. "You don't think,
you can't think or it
messes you up."
The only way to get
that good is to train and
Aitken is willing to work.
"Lexi is a rare athlete,
so disciplined, in every
aspect, every regimen, in
nutrition, she's very ded-
icated to working out
every day and she follows
the plan," her London
Legion coach, Sandy
!
Cooper -Ryder, said.
Aitken competes in the
100 -metre and 400m
hurdles and is one of
Canada's best. She trav-
elled to Ukraine last
summer for the world
youth championships
and to Florida this spring
trying to qualify for the
Youth Olympics.
"We had a very diffi-
cult challenge qualifying
in the first week of April
for the World Youth
Olympics, in Florida, "to
peak her performance in
the first week of April is
very atypical," said
Cooper -Ryder.
Aitken won both her
events, the 100m hurdles
and the 400m hurdles, to
get the invitation to com-
pete in China,"to open up
with a 13.65 in the hur-
dles puts her amongst
the best juniors in the
country, to make an
America's team( North,
South, Central and Car-
ibbean) is an anomaly for
a Canadian, we'll be for-
tunate to have 3 in the
whole Americas team."
Because the Youth
Olympics wants as many
competitors to get the
opportunity as possible,
each athlete is only
allowed one event.
That could be prove to
be a problem for Aitken
as she has qualified in
both the 100 -metre and
400m hurdles and was
given till midnight to
make the call as to which
event she wishes to

compete in. "I can't
decide, they're both
equal, pretty much," Ait-
ken said.
For Aitken, the future
looks bright although
the next Olympics in
Rio are not likely she
concedes, "I'm going to
be really young, for Rio
2016, but I'll be going to
the trials."
The main goal at the
Olympic trials will be to
run with her competi-
tion, "I run 58 (seconds,
in the 400) while they run
56-55" said Aitken.
For Aitken, her first
goal is getting back to
OFSAA, this year being
held in Missisauga.
"OFSAA is a tremen-
dous privilege to run in
that meet," said her
coach Cooper -Ryder, as
it's one of the largest
meets in North Amer-
ica. and "then the Cana-
dian Nationals in Monc-
ton, to race with the
seniors?'
So while the 2016
Olympics might be too
high a goal, getting a
scholarship to a U.S. col-
lege is on the horizon for
Aitken, who has some
idea's on ideal school
locations, "Texas, Flor-
ida, California or Ari-
zona, I like those kind of
places, the hot weather,
you can train better in
the heat I believe:' Even
though Aitken says you
can get a great education
and training even in the
cooler states with big
