Western medical students pay a visit to Clinton Public Hospital

A group of first year medi-
cal students from Western
University recently visited
Clinton Public Hospital to
get a feel for rural health
care.
Daniel Liu, Alasdair Rath-
bone, Radha Joseph and
Jason Morgenstern were all
participants in program
facilitated by Western Uni-
versity where medical stu-
dents are given the opportu-
nity to visit rural hospitals.
Rathbone, who is origi-
nally from Hamilton, said he
wasn't quite sure what to
expect when they came to
Clinton.
"I was really surprised, I
didn't know what they could
offer," he said.
Rathbone said they were
able to work alongside a
number of staff at the hospi-
tal, including two general
surgeons, doctors from the
local Family Health Team, a
nurse practitioner and an
orthopedic surgeon amongst
others.
Liu, who is from Toronto,
said he was impressed the
hospital.
"You can do so much, you
are not pigeonholed," he
said. "It was amazing, every-
one was so welcoming."
Joseph, originally from
London, said medical stu-
dents often hear about how
much experience doctors
can get by working in a rural
area.
All four agreed the staff
and patients; and the com-
munity in general, was very
welcoming.
Morgenstern, who is a
native of Perth in the Ottawa
area, said their program
really puts emphasis on the
students looking for career
options outside of big cities
like London and Windsor, to
look at small communities
across southwestern Ontario
and the entire province.
Joseph said one big plus
about visiting a smaller rural
hospital is they were able to
have a significant amount of
one-on-one time with the
staff.
"In a bigger hospital, you'd
be competing for their time,"
she said.
The students were at the
hospital from June 2 to June 5.
