Some of the same old song and
dance at candidates meeting
It was very encouraging to see a
packed house at the Holmesville
Community Centre on May 29 for
an all candidates meeting hosted
by the Huron County Federation of
Agriculture.
It was also very encouraging to
see that the people who attended
were very passionate about the
issues.
Conservative Lisa Thompson
was the clear favourite of those in
attendance receiving rousing
applause for most of her
statements.
Equal Parenting Party candidate
Dennis Valenta was well received
at times, although some members
of audience didn't seem to be buy-
ing into his "one issue" platform of
reforming divorce law. Credit
should be given to Valenta for
being upfront with his platform
and tying it to the questions that
were asked.
NDP Jan Johnstone appeared
very confident and was given a
good reaction to many of her
answers.
The frustration of many local res-
idents with the Liberals was often
apparent when candidate Colleen
Schenk answered questions -
many which were greeted with
complete silence.
However IthinkSchenksheknew
she wasn't going to be metwith rev-
erence as this area that has many
opponents to the Liberals' wind pro-
jects and she kept her composure
throughout the evening.
Considerable acknowledgment
should also be given to the organ-
izers of the event.
As the night went on, the atmos-
phere became a little more con-
frontational and many in attend-
ance were not happywith the
amount of time given for questions
from the floor.
While I was personally in
favour of allowing everyone to
ask their questions, I can under-
stand the organizers desire to
stick to the schedule.
What wasn't so encouraging was
the amount of time spent on the
topic of wind turbines.
Iwill come right out and agree
that the Green Energy Act and its
implementation has been pretty
much a complete failure.
There was not enough consulta-
tion with municipal government
and local residents at all, which in
tum has made it a very important
local issue.
But it was disappointing to see
how much of the conversation was
dominated by the topic.
There were a few questions each
about the economy and health care,
but it seemed more people were
worried about cancelling wind tur-
bine contracts than questioning the
candidates about how their parties
plan on attracting business to the
area or howtheywill keep important
health care services in our local hos-
pitals. While I'm sure the majority of
voters are no doubt concemed
about these issues it would have
been nice to see them given more
attention.
There was also a lot of same old
posturing and finger pointing that
three major parties usually do.
"The Liberals have scandals...
"The NDP propped up the Liber-
als.. "The Conservatives cut so
and so under Mike Harris..."
Yes, we know this. We were
there.
Although there were very good
questions asked and some inform-
ative answers from the candidates,
I personally find that I left the
meeting even more unsure of what
partyI am going to vote for.
Perhaps that's a good thing.

Clinton Legion Decoration
Day taking place June 11
To the Editor;
Each year, as Canadians we
observe two important dates to
recognize and remember our vet-
erans. Remembrance Day, and
Decoration Day. While November
11 has long since became our
annual day of Remembrance, Dec-
oration Day dates back much fur-
ther. Decoration Day was to not
only honour the veterans who sur-
vived the wars and came home,
but to "decorate" the graves and
monuments of our veterans lost in
war, or later in life, with Canadian
flags, and flowers in the warmth of
late spring or early summer. It is a
great time for families to get
together and tend to not only their
veteran's monuments, but to hon-
our all of their family members who
are resting at the Clinton cemetery.
The Royal Canadian Legion is host-
ing a memorial service for Decora-
tion Day on Wednesday, June 11 at
7:00 p.m. at the Clinton Cemetery
inviting all Clinton and area resi-
dents to honour the memory of their
loved ones who fought and died. The
Legion Colour Party, and Pipe Band
will be in attendance. We hope at see
everyone there.

"telephone townhall" June 5
As I meet with people through-
out Huron -Bruce, I hear the same
concerns: 1. Ontario's debt is out
of control; 2. Too many jobs are
leaving the province & our top
export is our youth; 3. Ontarians
cannot afford skyrocketing elec-
tricity bills; and 4. There is too
much red tape getting in the way
of small business.
And I hearyour concem, and even
anger, about the lack of accountability
when the government is caught in bil-
lion -dollar scandals.
You are also expressing anxiety
over misleading campaign advertis-
ing which exploits fear and causes
undue stress. Unfortunatelywe have
political parties who have special
friends that spend millions of dollars
to confuse and scare you - especially
in the areas of health care and
education.
Well, I have a different approach. I
ask you to join me in a Telephone
Town Hall, Thursday, June 5 at 7:05
pm so you and I may speak directly
about what matters most to Huron -
Bruce, and the PC Party's plan to get
this province back on track. We are
the ONLY Parry with a comprehen-
sive plan to rebuild Ontario. A PC
government will increase healthcare
investment. We will make mental
health care apriority. We will use evi-
dence to improve healthcare results.
We will put a new focus on chronic
care. You should expect nothing less.
As for the economy, it is pain-
fully simple: well-managed prov-
inces attract investment and cre-
ate opportunities. Ontario needs
a Premier who is a competent
money manager. We must spend
within our means, fight for lower
taxes, and help grow the econ-
omy. A stronger Ontario means
we will have the ability to invest
in important public services and
infrastructure. Again, you should
expect nothing less.
It's time to get Ontario - and its
people - working again. I invite
you to join my Telephone Town -
hall scheduled for Thurs., June 5
at 7:05 pm. For more information
about this opportunity to interact
with me directly please contact
my Campaign Office at 1-844-
357-2640 or you can send an
email to lisathompsonpc@out-
look.com.
