Racing under saddle at Clinton Raceway
One of Canada's oldest
sports is getting a shake-up:
Standardbred horse racing
in Ontario has historically
been dominated by harness
racing, where horses com-
pete in a mile long race, pull-
ing their drivers in two -
wheeled carts. New to the
Ontario harness racing cir-
cuit is Racing Under Saddle
(RUS) or Monte Trot as it is
widely known as in Europe.
RUS racing gives a fresh spin
on what patrons would typi-
cally see at a harness track,
by removing the sulky cart
and placing a rider on the
horses' backs.
The hybrid of harness and
thoroughbred racing began
to materialize in Ontario last
year. The majority of the RUS
Ontario riders are young
females established in the
industry. They work as train-
ers and grooms in harness
racing, and have eagerly
tackled the new twist on rac-
ing. Competing at Clinton
Raceway on July 13 were
several horses who have
changed pace, crossing from
harness racing into the RUS
world. This edition of RUS
Ontario marks the first time
that patrons will have the
opportunity to wager on this
unique style of racing.
Recently approved by the
Ontario Racing Commission
which oversees horse racing
of all disciplines in Ontario,
RUS allows bettors a new
and exciting challenge to
handicap.

to determine the winner.
Dayplanner, trained by Julie
Walker, and ridden by Marit
Valstad was a close second,
with Twin B Excalibur and
rider Evelyn Harms round-
ing out the triactor.
