by Ontario Nature
On June 21, Ontario Nature, a
leading conservation organiza-
tion, recognized the exceptional
contributions to natural habitat
protection made by six individu-
als and two groups.
The award ceremony was part
of Ontario Nature's 83rd annual
general meeting and gathering
which took place at YMCA
Geneva Park, located on the
shores of Lake Couchiching.
Tom Lobb, a local farmer and
lifelong naturalist, received the
Ontario Nature Achievement
Award for his outstanding contri-
bution to the organization.
Lobb has been involved with
wood turtle monitoring and pro-
tection for at least a decade,
searching for and defending their
nesting sites and marking their
shells for population studies. He
has also constructed artificial nest-
ing pits and collected eggs for the
Toronto Zoo's recovery program.
As a result of his efforts and those
of others like him, the endangered
wood turtle has experienced a pop-
ulation increase.
Lobb has also played a vital
role in surveys of the endangered
queen snake in the Maitland
River as well as rare plant
surveys.
In addition, he is a champion of
Ontario Nature's George G. New-
ton Nature Reserve south of
Goderich, frequently organizing
clean up and trail maintenance
events.

Bluewater welcomes provincial
Communities in Bloom judges
The communities of Bluewater are
set to welcome Communities in
Blooms (CIB) judges on July 29 and
30.
Lynda Rotteau of Goderich and
Bruce Warren of Oakville will be
taken on a personal and active tour
from Hensall to Bayfield; from Bruce -
field to St. Joseph and many stops in
between. An Ontario Parks Associa-
tion director during the period when
CIB was launched in 1999/2000, Ms.
Rotteau recently retired as co-ordina-
tor of emergency management and
other portfolios for the Town of
Goderich. Mr. Warren is a former
director and operations manager for
Canada Blooms and Landscape
Ontario who has been a CIB judge on
three previous occasions.
The evaluation tour allows the judges
to see and feel the community not just
read about it. Rotteau and Warren will
be tasked with evaluating the commu-
nities of Bluewater by assigning numer-
ical points for each of eight established
criteria for an overall percentage. The
rating from lowest to highest is symbol-
ized by one to five blooms respectively.
Last year, the Municipality of Bluewater
was awarded the ultimate prize of Five
Blooms as well as the Heritage Conser-
vation Criteria Award in the Ontario
Edition of the Communities in Bloom
program.
The Bluewater CIB planning com-
mittee will use the tour, written mate-
rial and its successful special projects
launched last year in its Strive for Five
program to try and increase the
municipality's score. Comprised of
representatives of municipal council,
merchants and community volun-
teers, the Bluewater Blooms Commit-
tee has called on representatives of
these sectors plus municipal staff to
join the evaluation tour to personally
present their interests to the judges.
Points of interest are identified in
each community that fit into the eight
criteria: Tidiness, Environmental
Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban
Forestry, Landscape Turf and
Groundcovers, Floral Displays and
Community Involvement.
The Bluewater Communities in
Bloom program was established by
Council in 2010 which took that com-
mitment a step further this year by
declaring the second week of June as
Communities in Bloom Week. Coun-
cil recognizes the economic and
social benefits derived from partici-
pation in Communities in Bloom and
celebrates the efforts of countless vol-
unteers and municipal staff who
make our communities great places
to live. A Community Profile is pro-
duced annually which is shared with
the judges and the public.
