Huron -Bruce federal Liberal nomination
Special to the Signal Star
Glammis native Allan Thomp-
son recently announced that he is
seeking the Liberal Party of Can-
ada nomination in hopes of
becoming the Huron -Bruce
riding's Liberal candidate in the
2015 federal election.
"I'm running because I want
to restore principled leadership
and integrity to Canadian poli-
tics," said Thompson, who was
born and raised on a farm just
outside the village of Glammis in
southern Bruce County, in a
media release.
"My decision to run is based on
my commitment to democracy
and my concern that the current
prime minister is undermining
the pillars of our democracy,"
Thompson said in the media
release. "I think the people of
Huron -Bruce deserve an effective
MP who is part of a government
they can be proud o£"
Thompson, 50, a journalism
professor at Ottawa's Carleton
University, is a former political
reporter for the Toronto Star. He
went to school at Bruce Township
Central Public in Underwood and
Walkerton District Secondary
School and began his journalism
career as a reporter with the Kin-
cardine Independent and Teeswa-
ter News.
The media release stated that
Thompson is committed to build-
ing the rural economy in Huron -
Bruce and becoming a strong
voice for farmers, as well as those
who live in the riding's small
towns and surrounding areas.
Thompson said he believes that
"his farm upbringing combined
with his deep knowledge of how
Ottawa works will help him to
bridge the rural -urban gap" and
he is also committed to looking
for ways to make settling down in
the region a more viable option
for young people who are drawn
away to seek schooling and job
opportunities.
The media release stated, "over
the years Thompson has
remained very engaged with the
community in Huron -Bruce
through his extensive family ties,
involvement with a number of
local organizations and as a mem-
ber of the congregation at St.
Paul's Presbyterian Church in
Glammis."
He played broomball with the
Glammis Flyers, compiled a his-
tory of the early years of Glammis
and has been a guest speaker for
such groups as the Saugeen chap-
ter of the Canadian Federation of
University Women and the Bruce
County Historical Society.
He has also been involved with
local history groups, helping to
review publications.
While reaching out to potential
supporters face-to-face,
Thompson also plans to
connect through the
extensive use of social
media in his campaign.
The main vehicle will be
his website, www.allan-
thompson.ca. A campaign
launch video was posted

Father and son, trainer and driver teams
combined to win the final two $18,000
Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots divisions
for two-year-old pacing fillies Sunday
afternoon at Clinton Raceway.
Both duos won their respective events with
a daughter of Mach Three, the fastest of
which was Wicked Speed. With Scott Young
in the sulky for trainer, co-owner and dad
Bob Young, the diminutive lass went gate -
to -wire in :30, 1:00, 1:30.2 and stopped
the clock in 1:59 over Brilliant Idea and
Hurricane Trina. The win was the second
straight in as many lifetime starts for
Wicked Speed, who made her debut in an
overnight at Clinton last Sunday where she
won by five lengths to earn $2,000.
Doug McNair was at the lines for dad Gregg
in the fourth division
with Mach Denali, who
managed to win by
more than two lengths
despite suffering interference just past the
three-quarters when the lead filly made
a break. Mach Denali was home in 2:01
over Jinglewriter and Ok Heartbeat. Doug
McNair also piloted the fastest winner on
this afternoon's card,
Katie Snoops, who
tripped the timer in
1:58.4. Tony O'Sullivan
trains the Sportswriter filly, a half-sister
to $573,000 winner Dalhousie Dave, for
owner/breeder John Fielding of Toronto.
The other two divisions were captured by
Andrew McCabe trainee
Stonebridge Quest
(by Camluck) and Trevor
Henry in 2:00.4 for
owners Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Guelph-
Eramosa, Ont. and Angie Stiller of Arva, Ont.
and Chase The Shadows (by Shadow Play)
with Ryan Holliday up in 1:59.
Live racing resumes at the Huron County
Oval, this Sunday. Post time for the 10 race
card is 1:30pm.
