Young girl from Clinton joins the fight against cancer
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
Birthday parties, cake and presents
are usually common on childrens'
birthdays but one young girl from Clin-
ton took part in something else on her
special day.
Last Wednesday at Reflections by
Design in Clinton Allyson Labreche-
Webb cut off all of her hair as a way to
support the fight against cancer. The
young girl says she cut off all of her hair
"to donate it to children with cancer
who would like a wig." Labreche-
Webb's father, Dave Webb, also joined
the cause and, on the same day, also
cut off all of his hair.
The fight against cancer hits close to
home for the Webb family. A couple of
years ago they lost a close friend to can-
cer and a family member is currently
battling the disease. As a result, Labre-
che-Webb approached her parents a
while back with the fundraising idea. "I
am proud to be raising funds to support
the fight against cancer," she says, "The
money I raise will help the Canadian
Cancer Society fund life-saving cancer
research, offer vital information on
cancer and provide compassionate
support services to people living with
cancer and their families "
According to the Canadian Cancer
Society, it is estimated that in 2014
97,700 Canadian men will be diagnosed
with cancer, 93,600 Canadian women
will be diagnosed with cancer, 40,000
men will die from cancer and 36,600
women will die from cancer. On aver-
age, 524 Canadians will be diagnosed
with cancer every day and 210 Canadi-
ans will die from cancer every day. The
society also says that about half of all
cancers can be prevented through
healthy living and policies that protect
the public.
Labreche-Webb turned 10 years old
on the day that she donated her hair
and expressed much enthusiasm while
doing so. When asked what she thought
after her hair cut she responded, "It's
not about the way you look, it's about
the way you feel!"
Labreche-Webb has raised around
$180 so far, however, her fundraising
goal is $500. Anyone who is interested
in donating to "Allymay's cut for cure"
may contact the Canadian Cancer
Society.
