CPS students
rainbow bracelets a
smashing success

Clinton News -Record
"We're kids and we wanted
to help kids that are sick."
That's how Clinton Public
School student Sara Cowman
describes the efforts of a
group of girls who made hun-
dreds of rainbow bracelets to
raise money for the Chil-
dren's Health Foundation.
Together with Sydney
McAsh, Mira Carter, Giselle
Carter, Carleigh Bartliff and
Autumn Fleming, the six
Grade 5/6 students sold rain-
bow loom bracelets for $1
each, with the original goal of
raising $200 for children's
health.
Instead, the project took on
a life of its own and the girls
raised $550.
The group started in mid-
November, making up to 50
bracelets a day, which they
sold to teachers and
classmates. A rainbow loom
is a device used to make elas-
tic bracelets, and just like the
team that made them, their
creations were colourful and
well received.
"It was the hottest Christ-
mas toy this year," McAsh
said.
The girls needed a teacher
to help them with the project
at school, and found a help-
ing hand with Mrs. Erb.
"I saw enthusiasm in this
group of girls that I could not
see go untapped," she said. "It
was exciting for me as a
teacher. It proves the power
of a small group and what you
can really do."
From recesses inside mak-
ing bracelets to morning
announcements, to making
signs and even a fundraising
thermometer, which quickly
became obsolete due to the
girls' success, the group was
kept constantly busy in their
effort.
