During the snowstorm that crippled southern Ontario and closed Huron County roads for three days, the police fielded many calls from motorists. Most were regarding cars that had gone off the road or were abandoned in the ditch. From Monday through to Thursday, Jan. 6-9, there were 32 abandoned vehi- cle calls and 21 motor vehicle collisions reported to police. Those were the calls police cleared off. Many motorists left their vehicles in the ditch as tow trucks were not availa- ble or unable to reach them. Some of the calls may have been doubled up, noted Constable James Stanley, and more incidents did occur, though they did not require a formal police process. The good news in all of this is despite the high number of calls, no one was hurt. "I couldn't find one where injuries were reported," Stanley said, going over the incident reports post -blizzard. "They are all related to property damage " Police also responded to a snowplow in the ditch, as well as a snowmobiler who had to abandon his sled while out checking on his cattle. In one instance, a police cruiser was rear-ended by a road grader. However, Stanley noted police also performed emergency escort services, transporting doctors to hospitals and bringing medication from Stratford to Goderich hospital and in one case, an escort of snowplows and police brought a patient to hospital in London. "There was nothing major," Stanley said. "We don't have that story of the guy buried in snow for 30 days." Highway 21 north was the worst of the roads in Huron County, finally opened by Friday morning and an over- turned salt truck saw Donnybrook Line near Auburn closed until Thursday. Stanley said when closing roads, the OPP continually checks on their status. "As soon as it's possible and passable, we open them up," he said.
