Joan Beierling
I would like to wish all my
readers a happy healthy and
prosperous New Year 2014 and
hope all had lots of quality time
with family over the Holiday Sea-
son. It was the first Sunday of the
New Year as a newly amalga-
mated Brucefield Community
United Church on Epiphany
Sunday Jan. 5.
Worship Leader Colin Snyder
opened with welcome and
announcements. Tyler Chuter lit
the Christ Candle and Sandra
Turner read the Gospel reading.
A Happy Birthday wish was
extended to Helen Faber cele-
brating her Birthday on Sunday.
McKayla and Katrina Merner
(daughters of Laurie and Rod
Merner) and (granddaughters of
Barb Consitt and Gary and Max-
ine Merner) are heading off on a
Mission trip to El Salvador in
February. McKayla and her
mother Laurie were speaking
and showing a video from when
Katrina went two years ago. They
are going with the program
called Homes for Hope and will
be building 10 homes for people
living in very poor conditions.
These homes are made of steel
and aluminum and cost about
$1800 -$2500 per home to build.
Geraldine Eckel thanked them
for coming and sharing. Follow-
ing the Service a chili luncheon
was served with all proceeds to
go to the Merner girls for their El
Salvador trip, which was well
over $700. The Wednesday Bible
Study group presented them
with $70. Thanks to all who sup-
ported. There was also money
raised from cookies that were for
sale on Sunday. Safe trip girls!
The Bible Study group will start
up again this Wednesday Jan 8
from 9:30-11:30am. Everyone
welcome! The Stan Lee Club
meets Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 2
p.m. at the Complex.
The Odd Fellows cards are Thurs-
day Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone
welcome!
The Worship Committee will
meet Monday Jan. 13 at 7:30
p.m.
The Stewardship Committee
will meet Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

play Tuesday Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

United Church Meeting will be
Jan 21 at 7:30 p.m.

be Wednesday Jan. 22 at 2 p.m.

Hall following Worship. The free-
will offerings will support the
Mission and Service fund. The
Stewards will be sponsoring this
Simple Fare Luncheon during
the winter months as a way to
kick-start the M&S fundraising
for the year.
The Varna Community is col-
lecting for upcoming wedding
for Jamie Stephenson (son of Bill
and Carol Stephenson) who is
marrying Stacey Sowerby on Feb.
1, 2014. This collection is given
up to Jan. 17 to anyone from
Varna. After 25 years of dedicated
Service June Cooper has retired
from her position as Church Sec-
retary. Thanks June for all your
hard work. Please welcome the
new Secretary Ashley (Harburn)
Sidles who started her position
Jan 12014. Ashely and her hus-

bulletins can still be sent to the
Church Office at bcuc@tcc.

WOBA Bulls seek all-star teams for 2014
The Western Ontario Baseball
Association has decided to
attempt fielding an all-star team
in each age category in 2014.
Tryouts will be held in the
spring for the all-star teams,
which will participate in three
AAA tournaments under the
WOBA Bulls banner.
Because of booking times for
tournaments, the WOBA is
looking for expressions of inter-
est for the all-star idea before
January 21. No deposit is
required, it is just to gauge sup-
port for the idea and register
with the AAA tournaments on
time.
Interested players should
contact Tom Valcke at valcke@
quadro.net or 519-703-4088.

Central Huron Council weighs
in on 2013, looks to 2014
CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 6
What was council's biggest chal-
lenge of this past year and what is the
biggest challenge in the coming
year?
How to say NO. Our council is too
wealthy and spending is out of control.
Even those who ran in the last election
specifically to fix REACH are now say-
ing yes to additional spending. We
have now entered the silly season also
known as an election year. REACH is
our biggest challenge and taxation is
running a close second.
What is one regret you have from
council in 2013? (Or, what would you
do differently in retrospect?)
My biggest regret is that I did not run
for a higher position so that I would
have been guaranteed a seat at County
Council. If anyone thinks lower tier
government is in an all time low it only
takes one look at the county upper tier
representatives to figure out why.
What is your top personal priority
on council for 2014?
My personal priority is to continue
fighting for the people, to deliver them
what they are asking for - to do it their
way and not my way. It is going to be
an uncomfortable year for Central
Huron Council, continuing to do the
same thing year after year and expect-
ing a different result is not working.
Are you going to run for office
again in 2014? (Why/why not?)
Today I am not. Ask me tomorrow. If
I devoted half as much time to my own
business and family as I do to this
position my life would look much dif-
ferent. Having said that, it is rewarding
to make a difference no matter how
small it may be. I also have received
suggestions from my cardiac medical
team that I may not need the extra
stress I am inflicting upon myself. My
only concern is that Central Huron
may lose by no longer having a person
who asks "WHY" and has no issue with
debating how business is conducted.
