On Sunday, Jan. 5, members of the community and representatives of dif- ferent ice user groups met at the arena to talk about why it matters to them, and why the ice should stay where it is. Ian Siertsema, Bayfield Arena Com- munity Partners member and repre- sentative for BCH Minor Hockey, said the goal of Sunday's meeting was to get the information out there, and to seek input from groups who want the ice to stay. The decision this summer to make 2013/14 the final season for ice in the arena produced a groundswell of pub- lic support for the ice surface. "It's a matter of getting community groups together - at least get that dis- cussion started and get that rolling," Siertsema said. "The committee the municipality has formed is strictly councilors. All they have to go on is what's been presented. We need to have a community voice that reflects what they have to say." Gozzard also presented a number of options, complete with cost, to Bluewater Council this fall. So far the group has not presented any other funding ideas, though Siertsema said information from Sunday's meeting will be made available through their website at www.bacp.ca, and will help lay the groundwork for what needs to be done. Meanwhile, those who showed up Sunday took the oppor- tunity to explain why the arena is important. For many, it's for the kids. Percy Renner has been a Bayfield resident since 1950. His father helped build the original Bayfield arena, which was done with community and Lions Club members. The idea then was to give the kids a place to skate, he said. "Where are the kids going to go now?" There are three ice users in Tyler Brady's family - four when his daughter goes into figure skating. Brady said losing the arena ice would be a detriment to the Bayfield community, Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser.( The winner of the Clinton Optimist Club 50/50 Draw held on December 7 was Melissa Merrill of Mitchell, Ontario.
