ongoing effort for CFHT

The Clinton Family Health Team had a successful year in
2013, recruiting two new doctors to the area. However, their
work is still far from over.
Executive director with the health team, Kimberly Van
Wyk, said they are always mindful of doctor recruitment,
foreseeing a need in the not too distant future. Over the past
two years, the health team has lost two doctors. More are
close to retirement, she noted.
"Looking at the current situation, we expect a need in four
to five years," she said. "With the struggle we've had in the
past two years... we want something there so we don't have
to make special requests all the time."
Those requests go to the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance,
who do most of the recruiting at job fairs. A recruitment com-
mittee of HPHA and health team members, physicians and
community members meets every other month.
Closer to home, the health team also recruit at the clinic
itself, hosting med students, residents and physicians who
come to Clinton filling in for doctors on vacation.
"We really work on recruiting them to remain in Clinton
and take on a practice here," Wan Wyk said.
A request was sent to council this spring for $50,000 to
assist with doctor recruitment, with the municipality paying
$10,000 per year for five years. Currently the hospital and
foundation both contribute to incentives for new physicians.
The budget is tight," Van Wyk said. "We have to make sure
we are competitive for new doctors."
The ideal candidate, she said, is a family physician that can
also devote some time to the emergency department.
Good news for people looking for a doctor - there are three
physicians in Clinton accepting patients, with the HPHA
looking to sign up around 600 new patients. New patients will
be accepted
regardless of if
they currently
have a family doc-
tor or not.
"If they live in
our area and they
are wanting a
family doctor in
Clinton, call the
office," Wan Wyk
said.
The health
team currently
has three doctors
that are accepting
patients.

Trillium grant makes debate feasible for council
Study to be conducted
in four months
Clinton News -Record
While there is no tax increase for a
$53,000 feasibility study into youth
entrepreneurship and volunteerism for
Central Huron, council was taxed in
coming to a decision on the matter
December 23.
Community Improvement Coordina-
tor Genny Smith was given the contract,
with the approval coming from the
municipal Steering Committee.
This is the municipality's second
request for funding, the first of which
was turned down because guidelines
for submissions were changed at the
senior government level.
The feasibility study looks to address
youth entrepreneurs, succession plan-
ning and volunteerism, and Smith said
this works in well with Central Huron's
strategic planning and active living
goals.
Community meetings, youth involve-
ment through area schools and busi-
ness interviews are all part of the study,
and $13,000 of the grant will be used for
facilitating the meetings.
CAO Peggy VanMierlo-West said the
project was delayed until the winter
months because it is a slow time for the
municipality and there are fewer activi-
ties going on that would require the
CIC's attention.
With the work starting this late in the
game (council was approved for fund-
ing in March, with the work to be done
by July) Coun. Alison Lobb said she had
serious concerns about the job getting
done. Smith was originally contracted
for a 37.5 hour work week with the BIA
and municipality, however, her 2014
contract is reduced.
"This is a full time job," she said to
Smith. "How can you do your first job
and have time for this?"
However, she said while she didn't
like the idea of approving the consult-
ant without a request for proposals, the
work being done will be valuable to the
municipality.
Coun. Brian Barnim said his concern
was the study would end up on a shelf
when completed, never to be looked at
again.
"I'm worried this will be a useless
report," he said. "We'll have to take it to
a new term and a new council. It will be
hard to do anything with this."
Rather, the councilor suggested the
$53,000 could be used for seed money
for young people looking to start their
own businesses. However, the grant
does not cover seed money.
Both Deputy -Mayor Dave Jewitt and
Coun. Burkhard Metzger said they had
no problem with implementation being
left to the next council, as it is regular
practice.
Due to the nature of the Trillium
grant, the money is basically use it or
lose it.
"If we don't spend it to our benefit
somebody else is going to spend it to
theirs," Metzger said. "It's part of the
whole package."
In a recorded vote, only Barnim and
Coun. Marg Anderson were against the
study approval.
