nial Legends Day in August, with the goal
of raising $25,000 for the Clinton Public
Hospital Foundation. To date, they have
raised more than $120,000 for the foun-
dation. Eight hall of fame harness racers
came to Clinton for the event.
Poolside panic
Sixteen people were sent to hospital
after a release of chlorine vapour at the
Vanastra pool August 9. All 16 were
released from hospital the same day. A
faulty gas valve was the cause of the
vapour release. Those affected suffered
coughing bouts and were sent to hospi-
tals in Clinton, Exeter and Seaforth.
Ho-ho's in Blyth
Central Huron gave the green light for
plans to build a gas station, store and res-
taurant at the corner of Hwy 4 and 25.
Representatives for the property owner
explained the location would house a
16 -seat Tim Horton's franchise at the site
of the former Grandview restaurant.
Impact studies conducted by the county
planning department showed little to no
effect for Main Street, Blyth.
Feed mill fix up
Fleming Feed Mill wrapped up a mas-
sive $4.5 million renovation project this
year, with the construction of a 135 -foot
grain tower. The project grew from the
original replacement of the mill's main
receiving leg and 40 -year old steel grain
tank.

approved for a combined $26,000 this

Dancing machine
Dancer Ally Whaling of Clinton trained
with the best of the best this past summer,
heading to National Circus School in
Montreal, home of Cirque du Soliel. She
was one of just 30 students across Canada
to be chosen for the program, and at just
10 years of age, has a bright future in
store.
MNR shrinldng
The Ministry of Natural Resources
office in Clinton had its staff cut in half
this summer as part of a restructuring
process from four employees to two. The
reduction meant people obtaining spe-
cialty licenses would have to go to other
centres, or Service Ontario locations. The
Ontario Public Service Employees Union
expressed concerns the staff reduction
would also mean a reduction in the qual-
ity of work and ultimately increase risk for
the natural environment.
U18 boys
The Clinton U18 boys soccer team won
the West Middlesex Challenge Cup in
August. The boys had a season record of
7-4-2.
SEPTEMBER
Aftermath
Bluewater Council was left with mak-
ing changes to its building code bylaws
after costly development fees on indus-
trial wind turbines fell through. On Sept.
4 we reported that council passed two
bylaws - one dealing with legal liability
and one with changes to the building
code to make sure all projects comply
with safety regulations. The move put
Bluewater in a position to ask for a $5 mil-
lion insurance requirement per turbine -
related incident, while the building code
bylaw could make sure turbine owners
were responsible for decommissioning
by municipal order should they fall
derelict.
Wave of success
The West Huron Wave girls hockey pro-
gram capped off their inaugural season in
2013, fielding three teams in the Lower
Lakes Female Hockey League. This year,
the Wave have teams in all divisions from

this September helping with the Wave's
preseason.

to turn the cell phone problem into a learning opportunity with
its Bring Your Own Device program, which allows students to

certain courses.
Mustang power
The Clinton Mustangs mosquito baseball team won the
WOBE Tier 2 Division title this summer, making it three years in
a row for Clinton. The Mustangs had a huge 18-7 win over Exeter
in the final in Parkhill.
Forever young
On Sept. 4 we reported on Mary Grace Whiteman, who cele-
brated her 95th birthday with a motorcycle ride. The young -at -
heart Whiteman took a 10K trek to Brucefield and back with
friend Murray Taylor.
Tough talk
On Sept. 3, Council heard from solicitor Valerie M'Garry that
stronger language was needed if council wanted to make their
positions clear in their OMB appeal of the Huron County Offi-
cial Plan. M'Garry asked the OMB for more time while Central
Huron came up with a list of concrete issues for the appeal as
well as witness statements.
A fond farewell
