year in review Wednesday, January 1, 2014 • News Record 7 Team Ontario bros Jesse and Cody McIntyre of Brucefield represented Team Ontario at the Canada Deaf Games in Edmonton, earning an invite to join Team Canada. The brothers headed to Finland in March for the World Deaf Hockey Championships where they took home silver medals. The twins said having hearing loss was a big motivator in their athletic careers, proving they could play the game just as well as anyone else. APRIL Blowing in the Wynne Premier Kathleen Wynne faced a tough crowd when she vis- ited Clinton this past spring, with about 80 anti -wind protestors waiting outside the REACH Centre for the Huron Agri -summit. Wynne was there to talk agriculture after assuming the role of Minister of Agriculture, saying she wanted to "shine a light on that part of the economy:' In response to the wind protestors, Wynne said it is something the Minister of Energy is working on. She met with three representatives from the wind groups in private. Expanding education Both Huron Centennial and Hullett Central schools under- went renovations in the past year in advance of full-day kinder- garten classes. Huron Centennial received $320,920 for work involving combining two existing classrooms, a new bathroom and electrical room. Hullett Central was approved for $1.47 mil- lion for a new classroom and replacement of lighting, mechani- cal and ventilation systems. Novice gold The BCH Novice Rep Ice Dogs took Mitchell in game five to win the WOAA championship. BCH lost the series opener to Mitchell, but came back with two wins before a game four loss sent them to the final showdown. Merging successfully The BCH and Seaforth hockey associations merged their girls hockey program for the 2012-13 season with about half of the 90 players coming from either centre. Appealing appeal Central Huron residents showed their support for council's appeal of the Huron County Official Plan this past spring. Municipalities were not notified of amendments to the county's OP until after the 20 -day appeal period, though Central Huron acted prior to the deadline, taking issue with sections pertaining to renewable energy and commercial water taking. Tax break Central Huron finalized their budget in April, managing a zero -per cent tax increase for the municipality. However, the increase was only possible due to increased assessment values and lower education and county rates. Big-ticket projects for Central Huron in 2013 were East Street Reconstruction, Cowper Drain, Mary Street, Harlock bridge and solar panels for REACH and CHCC. Butt ban Huron County looked into expanding its smoking ban to patios, parks, playgrounds and sports venues in 2013. Council heard that nine -metre setbacks in other communities had proven tough to enforce. Members only Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson's private member's bill designed to return energy planning and pricing powers to municipalities was defeated by a Liberal/NDP coalition this past April. The Ensuring Affordable Energy Act addressed reports from both the Fraser Institute and Auditor General, which stated expanding wind energy will raise costs 40-50 per cent. Spruced up Renovations to the Clinton Public Hospital were completed this year. The ER and ER reception areas were repainted and refurnished and a new accessible washroom was created in Students at Huron Christian School donated more than 30 full carts of groceries to Huron County food banks during a Feb. 14 food drive. addition to a new and improved patient lounge. The renovations cost about $200,000. Nurse numbers Both the Clinton and Seaforth hospi- tals were looking for nurses this past year, to address a growing shortage. The two sites were seeking three part-time nurses to work between them and one full time position. Local tragedy Central Huron native RJ Rata was found murdered in his London home just weeks after he moved to the city to be closer to his children. Ratz was the subject of a missing person search since February before his body was discovered by police in April. Jason Cleveland was charged with second-degree murder in the case. Healthy announcement Health Minister Deb Matthews announced $5 million in funding for the Southwest Local Health Integration Net- work (LHIN) in early April. Among the approved projects were funds for remote counseling, scheduling and electronic records technology for the Clinton and Seaforth hospitals. Go figure skate The Clinton Skating Club fielded a handful of medalists at the Futures Com- petition held in Ayr in 2013. Averlee Jar- dine -Pion took home silver, while Nico- las Eveland, Ashley Tugwell and Bessie MacDonald all brought home gold. Sounding off CHSS band members kept the beat going for 24 hours this past spring for their Sound-A-Thon fundraiser. The non- stop musical marathon raised money for the music program's trip to Chicago in May. License to drink Central Huron heard from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission and OPP in April advising the municipality to license its facilities.
