Wednesday, February 19, 2014 • News Record 7 Local student knows what home is all about Whitney South QMI Agency The word "home" can mean a lot of things to different people. For some, the concept is merely a place to lay your head, or to store your stuff. But for 9 -year-old Drew Bechard, a home is something he feels thankful for, each and every day. The St. Joseph's Catholic School stu- dent was just one of several students who participated in Genworth's Mean- ing of Home Contest through the Meridian Credit Union, Seaforth Branch. The contest, which raises money for Habitat for Humanity, invited students from Grades 4 to 6 to submit a written essay about what home means to them for a chance to direct $60,000 to a Hab- itat for Humanity build of their choice in Canada. For every contest entry received, Genworth donated $5 to the student's local Habitat affiliate. Cherry Hoste, branch manager at Meridian's Seaforth location, visited five area elementary schools in order to promote the contest, receiving a total of 76 entries from local children resulting in a $380 donation. In addition to the contest grand prizes offered by Genworth, the Merid- ian Seaforth branch offered two iPads, one for the school with the highest participation rate and one for the best local submission. The school with the highest partici- pation was St. James Catholic School. Choosing the winner of the best individual submission was a challenge for Meridian, as staff says they were impressed by the high quality of entries. Whitney South QMI Agency Drew Bechard is presented with an iPad at St. Joseph's Catholic School Jan. 31. The Grade 4 student's submission won out of 76 entries for Genworth's Meaning of Home Contest which asked students to describe what the word "home" meant to them. "While we found them all insightful and thoughtful, Drew's submission seemed to stand out to all of us as he concentrated more on his understand- ing of what others do not have and his wish was for others to have a safe and happy home like he has," explained Hoste. "His essay clearly showed his desire to help others and a full appreciation of his safe and happy home, not just individual possessions." Being surprised at school with an iPad, not to mention a trip out for lunch where dessert was served first, might be too much for just any kid to handle, but Drew took it in stride and was all smiles. Drunk skunk tops list of animal control calls 2013 Gerard Creces Clinton News -Record Drunk as a skunk is more than just an expression. Animal Control Officer Bob Trick delivered his annual report to council Feb. 10. The highlight of which was 2013 ending with a drunken skunk New Year's Eve. "He was definitely staggering," Trick said to council, noting the animal also had a case of bad breath. The majority of calls placed in 2013 were for sick raccoons and coyotes killed after livestock was killed. Both received 53 calls. There were 34 dogs caught in Central Huron in 2013, though only seven dog attacks, and nine complaints about barking. Trick noted he has been talking to the Crown about dog bite regulations and enforcement. In once instance, a dog broke into a house and killed the owner's cat, while in a more hair-raising experience, one person was unlucky enough to find a bat on the underside of their toilet seat. There were even a few runaways included in the annual report, with two horses, a lamb and a jackass at large. There were 20 incidents that required both animal control and OPP. "We were so full of excite- ment anticipating how Drew and his class would react," she said. "It was one of the most heart-warming things I have ever experienced." Homeless By Drew Bechard, Age 9 Some kids don't have houses and their mom and dad don't have money to buy houses. So some homeless people live in boxes to keep warm. Some homeless people live on the street and they ask people for money to buy food or drinks and some people don't have a family because their mom or dad have split up I'm luck that my mom and dad have money for a house and I wish that I could give $1,000 to every single homeless person in this world so that I could help them learn to have a happy home like I have. I hope that the whole school has a family and a safe home.
