Hallett trails open for skis,
snowmobiles, sightseeing
Clinton News -Record
The snowy weather has been a boon for
winter enthusiasts looking to connect with
the great, cold outdoors. At Hullett Wildlife
Area, snowmobilers and skiers are out tak-
ing advantage of the white stuff. The wildlife
area is a popular spot for both activities.
The park is open for exploring, though
there is reduced access in the winter months
due to winter road closures. Hullett keeps
two of its 20 parking areas cleared during the
winter for hikers and skiers. Parking access
is available at 80602 Wildlife Line, and maps
are available for visitors.
While many think of Hullett as a provin-
cial park, it is actually one of 31 designated
wildlife areas in Ontario and one of the larg-
est. As such, they cannot charge access fees.
The 5420 acre wildlife area also includes
850 acres of prime agricultural land owned
by Hullett, which, along with donors, help
offset the additional costs of maintaining the
habitat area as do funding grants, such as
the Canada Summer Jobs program.
Their website (hulletmarsh.com), high-
light the goings-on in the wetland as well as
points of interest, and membership
information.
Volunteers from the Friends of Hullett
Marsh are vital to the wildlife area's mainte-
nance, and manager Scott Austin noted
many kids from the community also help
out. They are always looking for donations of
lumber and yellow rust paint.
This year, Hullett has a resident eagle liv-
ing on the property, and have marked a
400m zone around the nest. Austin explained
habitat management is one of the main
goals of Hullett.
On the near horizon, Hullett has some
Family Day activities in the works. A day of
skiing and snowshoeing will be taking place
Sunday, Feb. 16 from 1-3 p.m. at the Wildlife
Line entrance, with a second event running
at the same time Monday.
