LCBO stores raise funds for Hearing Foundation of Canada
To the Editor,
Starting February 2, the public
can help support The Hearing
Foundation of Canada by making
a donation at any of the more
than 635 LCBO stores throughout
Ontario. Donation boxes for The
Hearing Foundation of Canada
will be displayed at LCBO check-
out counters until March 1.
The Hearing Foundation of
Canada is committed to elimi-
nating the devastating effects of
hearing loss on the quality of life
of Canada, particularly youth, by
promoting prevention, early
diagnosis, leading-edge medical
Letter quick to criticize, slow to specify
To the Editor,
The rambling 'letter' under the
heading, "Reader disagrees with
MP's assessment of the nation"
(page 4-5, January 29 edition),
which took up an inordinate
amount of space in your paper
makes me wonder how anyone
can spend that much time to try
and downplay our Member of
Parliament's comments on Can-
ada. This 'letter' sounds to me
like the usual ranting of a mem-
ber of a certain political party,
which endeavors to find fault but
has difficulty with specifics.
Elect that party to govern and
Canada will be in real trouble.
I don't think this letter will
have the majority of to change
their intention to vote for Ben
Lobb in the next election. Per-
haps the writer should spend
time dealing with the real prob-
lems of the current Ontario
government.

ACW cancer rates
still under study
Clinton News -Record
The Huron County Health Unit is
still collecting information for its
investigation into a possible cancer
cluster in Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh Township.
Public Health Epidemiologist, Dr.
Erica Clark, says the health unit has
received a steady response from res-
idents who have had cancer and
want to be included in the
investigation.
The health unit launched the
investigation after receiving a con-
cern from a resident about the
number of people with cancer in the
ACW area. Huron County as a whole
does not have higher than normal
cancer rates, but cancer rates are not
broken down by township.
Clark is collecting the following
information from people who call
in:
• Name
• Phone Number (for follow up
questions)
• Email (to receive investigation
summary in March)
• Gender
• Date of birth
• Type of cancer diagnosed with
• Year of diagnosis
• Address at time of diagnosis
• Length of time lived at address
prior to diagnosis
If an individual moved away from
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
Township prior to
being diagnosed with cancer, they
will be asked for the address where
he or she used to live and the years
lived at that address.
People with deceased friends or
family members who lived in Ash-
field-Colborne-Wawanosh Town-
ship and were diagnosed with can-
cer are also asked to contact Clark at
the health unit at 519-482-3416 or
email her at eclark@huroncounty.ca
before February 28, 2014.
All information is kept confiden-
tial and no names or other
identifying
information will be released.
An update on the investigation
will be made available in March
2014.
research and successful inter-
vention. The donations made
through the LCBO's Provincial
Donation Box Program will help
to advance hearing health initia-
tives across Ontario. The Hearing
Foundation has been delivering
Sound Sense, a noise -induced
hearing loss prevention educa-
tion program, in Ontario, since
2005 and has taught approxi-
mately 300,000 children to save
their hearing for the music.
The Hearing Foundation of
Canada is one of 28 provincial
and numerous local charities
that will benefit from LCBO's
province -wide donation box pro-
gram in 2014. In 2012, LCBO
raised a total of more than $6.6
million for charities through spe-
cial programs and initiatives, of
which $6 1 million was raised
through in-store fundraising. In
addition, LCBO's annual divi-
dend transfer to the Ontario gov-
ernment, which totaled $1.7 bil-
lion in fiscal 2012-13, excluding
taxes, supports a wide range of
important government pro-
grams, services and priorities,
including health care and
education.
The Hearing Foundation of
Canada thanks the public for its
support when shopping at their
local LCBO store from February 2
- March 1, 2014.
