M
unro Festival in 2015
A festival honouring one
of Huron County's most
accomplished citizens will
undergo some changes next
year.
The Alice Munro Festival
was developed in 2003 by
the Wingham and Area His-
torical Society to honour the
body of work created by
Nobel Prize-winning author.
In 2009, the Festival went
into abeyance for three years
before it was revitalized as
the Alice Munro Writers and
Readers Festival in 2012.
According to organizers,
over the past three years the
Festival created unique liter-
ary events, attracted interna-
tional visitors, and grew par-
ticipation in the annual
Short Story Competition by
500%.
In fall 2013, Alice Munro
won the Nobel Prize for Lit-
erature. Stakeholders came
together to explore opportu-
nities to drive economic
development initiatives by
leveraging Ms. Munro's
international standing.
Guided by an outside con-
sultant, the festival is again
choosing new dates and a
new name for 2015 and
beyond.
The Alice Munro Festival
of the Short Story is an
annual three-day festival
dedicated to nurturing
emerging writers of the short
story and to developing an
audience for the literary
form that earned Alice
Munro the Nobel Prize in
Literature.
Under the leadership and
vision of Mary Wolfe and
Mary Brown - festival co -
directors - the festival will
take place the first weekend
in June annually beginning
June 5 to 7, 2015.
"In 2015, the festival will
have enormous opportu-
nity to attract high profile
writers of short fiction
thanks to one-time funding
The annual festival that celebrates the works of Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro will be
going through some changes in 2015. The festival has been renamed to The Alice Munro Festival of
the Short Shorty and Mary Wolfe and Mary Brown have taken over as the festival co -directors.
through the Ministry of
Training, Universities and
Colleges and a local Labour
Market Partnership grant,"
reported outgoing Chair,
Karen Stewart. The Direc-
tors will receive an hono-
rarium to lead the Festival
previously produced by
volunteers.
"This change in structure
allows the Festival to grow in
new ways," says Stewart.
"Mary Brown and Mary
Wolfe are the perfect co -
directors, as both have cre-
ated and produced the pop-
ular Bayfield Writers Festival
when independent owners
of the Village Bookshop in
Bayfield. Their contacts in
publishing will be invaluable
in their new roles."
The Short Story Competi-
tion will remain a key focus
of this Festival. Competition
guidelines, deadlines and
full details of the weekend's
new events will be
announced in late January.
