Canadians in many parts
of the country should brace
themselves for another
brutal winter.
The Weather Network's
winter forecast shows an El
Nino system will likely
bring colder -than -normal
temperatures across the
eastern Prairies, Ontario
and Quebec, but B.C.
should see normal
temperatures.
Even though El Nino is
often associated with a
warmer winter, it's so far a
weak system, which could
result in colder tempera-
tures, the forecast says.
"From the Rockies to
Atlantic Canada, there's the
potential for extended peri-
ods of time where the
weather will resemble last
winter, but that's not to say
this winter will be an exact
repeat," chief meteorologist
Chris Scott said in a press
release.
He said December is
likely to be a "rollercoaster;'
with winter hitting hardest
early in the new year.
"Our forecast team
expects winter will really be
felt in January and Febru-
ary with more frequent out-
breaks of extreme cold."
The southern coast of
B.C. should expect higher -
than -average temperatures
and lower precipitation. An
average winter is expected
for the rest of the province.
The Prairie provinces
have drastic weather
changes to look forward to,
with temperature swings
expected in Alberta and
most of Saskatchewan.
Lower -than -average tem-
peratures are forecast for
Manitoba and eastern
Saskatchewan.
Ontario and Quebec are
headed for another year of
colder -than -normal tem-
peratures, with potential for
more snow depending on a
storm track from the north-
eastern U.S.
Atlantic Canada is
expected to have an aver-
age winter.
