Clinton News Record, 2014-12-10, Page 13Christmas spirit in full effect at St. Anne's Colin Dobson Minister of Public Relations December has begun and the Christmas spirit is upon us. Plenty of events are tran- spiring at the school before the Christmas break beings. One such event is St. Anne's annual Evening of the Arts. This event featured vari- ous musical and theatrical performances from St. Anne's students. There was also a variety of artwork to observe. Tickets for the Semi For- mal dance at St. Anne's have also started to go on sale. The theme for Semi Formal this year is based off the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This novel embodies the iconic jazz era of the 1920s. Approaching Christmas, Students for Social Justice have begun selling Fair Trade items dur- ing lunch. These items make great Christmas gifts, as well as support principles of decency and fairness in how goods are sold. Next week on Tuesday, Dec. 16th, St. Anne's will be holding our Advent Mass in the gym. This event helps both staff and students to take time out of their Cut back, quit and win big in 2015 Young adults and post- secondary students in Huron County can win big in 2015 by cutting back, quitting or staying smoke free. The 2015 "wouldu- rather... contest", hosted by the Huron County Health Unit and Leave the Pack Behind, offers cash prizes of up to $2,500. Young adults between the ages of 18 to 29 pledge to quit smoking, reduce their smoking, or stay smoke-free during the six- week contest period. Reg- istered students of any age at a publically funded post -secondary institution in Ontario can also enter the contest. "If you've decided to take the step of quitting smoking or cutting back, this contest is a great addi- tional motivation," said Julie Verch, public health nurse. "And it's not just for smokers. Non-smokers age 18 to 29 can sign up for a chance to win prizes as well. It's all about giving yourself the gift of health in 2015." Entrants must sign up at wouldurather.ca by Jan. 25, Applications for Canada Summer Jobs program being accepted On Dec. 4, Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb announced that employers can now apply for funding under Canada Summer Jobs 2015. This funding will create thousands of job opportu- nities for students across the country. Funding will be availa- ble to not-for-profit organ- izations, public -sector employers and small busi- nesses to hire qualified young people aged 15 to 30, who are full-time stu- dents and intend to return to school in the fall. It is estimated that up to 35,000 young Canadians will ben- efit from summer employment while helping employers address skills shortages. "Our government's pri- orities are creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity," Lobb said. "Through Can- ada Summer Jobs, we are helping young Canadians get the skills and experi- ence they need to get jobs now and in the future. I encourage employers to apply for funding to create jobs that will help stu- dents, employers and their local economies. White Gift was also cele- brated and the generous offerings were dedicated. Communion was also cele- brated. Sunday, Dec. 7 was the second Sunday of Advent. There will be a Carol sing Saturday Dec. 13th at the Knox Presbyte- rian Church in Goderich featuring the Goderich Laketown Band, Massed Choir and Pipe Organ. Also featuring guest musician flautist Jan Searle and MC Andy Ross. Free will offering to benefit Huron Hospice. Huron's Women Shel- ter is featuring Huron - Song Chorus, Mon., Dec. 15 at 7:30pm at the Northside United Church in Goderich. Celebrating 13 years of service as Bluewater's first mayor and 30 years in Huron County politics on Dec. 17th in the Varna Complex from 1 to 4 p.m. Come on out and cele- brate with Bill Dowson and bring your best wishes. There will be speakers at 2 p.m. and all are welcome!!! Tracy Rau from the Varna area just got back from Guatemala in South America volun- teering with Doctors with borders. Congrats Tracy! Over 60 Brucefield Community United Church ladies enjoyed a wonderful dinner last Tuesday evening at 4 p.m. some of the ladies sang Christmas carols at Huronview. After their dinner. Ladies were divided into groups by numbers and each gave a different ver- sion for the 12 days of Christmas as on the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me one Dia- mond and this one on till the 12th day. Joyce Hummel then gave the Blessing and Sandra Turner welcomed everyone and all ate a delicious turkey dinner. Door prizes which were Poinsettias and Christ- mas logs went to 10 lucky ladies. Following dinner all went to the Sanctuary for a short Christmas program. Ladies wrote questions on paper and answers on other papers and then dif- ferent questions were read and different answers, which give everyone some humour. Mona Stephenson read poem "A Month Before Christmas" fol- lowed by the Scripture reading. Joyce Wilson led a skit with Barb Moffat and Connie Townsend at Christmas Eve at the BUCC portraying a cou- ple giving their offerings which also humoured everyone. Sandra Turner read the Story of Bethlehem, the real meaning of Christ- mas. Many hymns were sung. A short Business Meeting followed the program. Joyce Hummel thanked the committee in charge and read thank yous from Janice Presca- tor and family, Ashely Stephenson, and Dan, Danielle and Porter Rathwell.
