Reader believes parents should have
input in sex education curriculum
To the Editor:
This letter is in response to the col-
umn written by Tara Ostner and pub-
lished in the Clinton News Record on
Nov 19.
You seem surprised that some people
have concerns about plans to "update"
the curriculum on sex education. Do
you really think six -year-olds should be
introduced to such subjects as same-sex
relationships, pornography or other
adult programs, and by "professionals';
professional at what?
Has there been some study done to
learn the effects of opening up these
subjects to very young children or is it
the government's attempt to put their
view into children's minds before they
are old enough to question it for
themselves.
By the way, who is writing the curricu-
lum, the school board, the government,
both of these have proven over and over
that they "tolerate" anything but Chris-
tian values. I agree with "parents as first
educators" that parents have the right to
say what is being taught to their chil-
dren. Parents should be informed and
agree with the content of this new cur-
riculum before one child is subject to
the professional's opinion.
I don't know what research you are
referring to that says young people who
have received sex education are more
likely to wait. Have you walked down
the street lately and watched the teen-
age girls pushing baby carriages. Since
when did knowing the risks and dangers
ever stop young people from trying it
anyway? Take the case of drugs and
alcohol, never before have young peo-
ple been so enlightened about the dan-
gers and risks. Never before has drugs
and alcohol been so abused.

cials to "maintain a firm position
against the invasion" of "abnormal
emphasis" on sex and violence in
films, TV, theater and print was
endorsed by the Clinton town council
Tuesday evening. Councilor Cameron
Proctor, seconded by Councilor Frank
Cook, urged support for the resolution
initiated by the Town of Markham. His
motion was passed by a 7-1 vote, with
Councilor Ted McCullough dissenting.

Prior to each meeting of the Legion,
the president opens the session with
these words... let us pause for a few
moments to think reverently of those
of our comrades who by sea, by land
and in the air, laid down their lives for
their Sovereign and Country. Their
sacrifice will ever inspire us to labor
on, to the en that those who survive
and need our aid may be assured of
assistance and which they died may
ever be worthy of the sacrifice they
made.

Many needy children and adults in
the Clinton area will have a happier
Christmas this year. On December
25th they will be enjoying new gifts
thanks to the help of the Children and
Family Services Christmas Bureau, an
annual project that helps hundreds of
less fortunate families in Huron
County. In Clinton, Wynne Homuth
has coordinated the project for seven
years and this year received some extra
help and donations from the Clinton
business community through their toy
drive. Wynne sorts through all the arti-
cles received, then meets with each
needy family, selecting gifts that would
be the most beneficial to them. For
Wynne, Christmas wouldn't be as sat-
isfying and fulfilling without her vol-
unteer work for the Bureau. Her
Christmas is made more special by
enabling others to have a happy holi-
day as well.

They may not know if you've been
bad or good - but they'll sure find out
if you've been drinking and driving.
The Goderich OPP detachment is gear-
ing up its RIDE program in preparation
for the holiday season. Officers will set
up RIDE checkpoints whenever possi-
ble, says Goderich OPP Cst. Mike Scott.
Checkpoints will not only be set up
along the heavily travelled roads but in
other areas as well. Some will be run in
conjunction with local municipal
police, others by the OPP alone. The
enhanced RIDE program will run from
now until after New Year's Day, Scott
said.

A tip from a motorist led to a Brant-
ford women being charged with a
number of offences. On Nov 28 at
approximately 6:45 p.m., a motorist
contacted the OPP over an erratic
driver. The motorist who was following
the suspect indicated that the vehicle
was all over the road and was traveling
on Highway 8 in Tuckersmith Town-
ship. A Seaforth OPP officer came
across the vehicle and stopped the
1993 For Taurus. The driver was found
showing physical symptoms of impair-
ment and was arrested and taken for
breath test in Seaforth.
