Help kick off your holiday season with the Blyth Festival Singers
Special to the News Record
Prepare to be swept
away! Blyth Festival Singers,
together with Juno award-
winning organist Ian Sadler,
present selections of Handel's
"Messiah" on Dec. 7, 2014.
A musical rite of the holiday
season, the Baroque -era ora-
torio still awes listeners 250
years after the composer's
death. This performance by
the Blyth Festival Singers will
be no different. With almost
fifty voices and the wonderful
acoustics and powerful organ
of historic St. George's Angli-
can Church, this is the concert
to kick start your Christmas
season. And be prepared to
join your voices in song with
some well -loved carols too.
Audience members will be
immersed in the musical
accompaniment and guest
performance of one of Cana-
da's foremost organists, Ian
Sadler. Ian's extensive musical
career began as a boy choris-
ter at St. Paul's Cathedral, in
London, England, with stud-
ies at The King's School, Can-
terbury and Bristol University,
and postgraduate study at
London University. Ian holds
degrees in musicology and
education, with organ diplo-
mas from Trinity College of
Music and The Royal College
of Organists.
Ian moved to Canada in
1980 to work as director of
music at Grace Church -on -
the -Hill in Toronto and as
choral director at Upper Can-
ada College. Sadler has repre-
sented Canada internationally
as an organist and recitalist.
Tours have since taken him to
Denmark, Sweden, and Ger-
many, to Paris' Notre Dame
Cathedral, and Vienna's St.
Stephen's, to Australia and
across the US. In 1995, Ian
represented Canada as the
organist for the United
Nations 50th Anniversary Cel-
ebrations. In 1999, Lauren-
tian University awarded Ian
the honorary adjunct position
of Professor of Music.
Annually, Ian plays for
many Canadian choirs in
works such as Handel's Mes-
siah and Bach's Christmas
Oratorio, St. Matthew Passion
and St. John Passion. He has
even performed in costume as
Bach himself!
Sadler's extensive recording
discography includes eight
solo organ CDs and over 35
choral CDs - and a movie
credit for his organ music in
Chariots of Fire. Ian has been
nominated for The Order of
Ontario (2003) and The Pre-
mier's Award for Excellence in
the Arts (2007) and was
awarded a fellowship from
The Royal Canadian College
of Organists in 2007.
Ian and Catherine Sadler
live in Stratford and they con-
tribute greatly to the music
and arts scene in southwest-
ern Ontario. Together they
founded the 50 voice Cathe-
dral Singers of Ontario, which
represents Canada in the UK.
For 22 years, each summer
and winter, the Cathedral
Singers have toured to the UK
to act as choir -in -residence for
a week at a Cathedral. In 2014
they performed at London's
St. Paul's Cathedral and
Oxford's Christ's Church
Cathedral.
This past year, the Stratford
Concert Choir celebrated
Ian's 25th anniversary as its
artistic director.
Locally, Ian has also been a
remarkable asset and per-
former with Exeter's nascent
Bach Festival of Canada. And
now the Blyth Festival Singers
are privileged to be able to
perform with him.
Many are not aware that
Handel turned to the com-
position of Messiah when a
stroke rendered him unable

to perform. Though he lived
in London, England under
the patronage of King
George, an invitation to
Dublin, Ireland allowed
Handel to premier his Mes-
siah using singers from Dub-
lin's St. Patrick's and
Christchurch Cathe-
drals. Surprisingly, the work
was performed on April 13,
1742 in a grand music hall
and not in a church. No
definitive copy of Messiah
exists - Handel kept tinker-
ing with it and adapting it to
suit the abilities of the
singers and instruments
available.
However, a manuscript
copy of the Hallelujah Cho-
rus remains on display to
this day at St. Patrick's
Cathedral in Dublin. Two -
hundred -and -seventy-two
years after its inaugural per-
formance audiences still
flock to hear this majestic
oratorio at Christmas, and
rise in elation as the signa-
ture Hallelujah Chorus fills
the hall.
The Blyth Festival Singers
performance of Messiah will
be on Sun., Dec. 7 at 2:30 pm
at St. George's Anglican
Church, 87 North St., Goder-

follow.

Habitat Regulations for Protecting Species at Risk
Ontario is fortunate to have a wide variety of plants and animals. Over 200 of these species, however,
are currently 'at risk'. One of the key threats to their survival is habitat loss.
Under the Endangered Species Act, 2007, the Government of Ontario has passed habitat
regulations for Eastern Sand Darter, Hine's Emerald, Hungerford's Crawling Water Beetle, Pitcher's
Thistle, and Wavy -rayed Lampmussel. These provisions will help protect and recover these plants
and animals. The regulations come into force on January 1, 2015.
Want to know more about habitat regulations or the Endangered Species Act? Information on the
regulations is available on the Environmental Registry of the Environmental Bill of Rights website
at ontario.ca/ebr (Registry #012-1549) and on the Species at Risk website at
ontario.ca/speciesatrisk.
