Huron Women's Shelter
holds calendar launch
On November 20, 2014
Huron Women's Shelter held
a launch at the Duchess
Room of the Bedford Hotel
for a calendar entitled
"Doing the Right Thing in
2015". This calendar was cre-
ated to help raise awareness
of the issue of violence
against women. The calen-
dar is meant to celebrate the
many ways that all of us can
support women's safety and
equality, speaking up and
taking action to challenge
the violence that threatens
women and children.
Huron Women's Shelter
could not continue our
important work without the
support of our community
and the individual women
and men who care about
these issues.
The idea to produce a
calendar was the direct
result of a community work-
shop presented by Michael
Kaufman, a well-known
activist in the prevention of
violence against women and
the founder of the White
Ribbon Campaign. We pre-
sent our calendar as a part of
the many activities we are
engaged in to raise aware-
ness of the fact that Novem-
ber is Woman Abuse Aware-
ness Month.
As a community we
value the contribution of
all who work to support
efforts to end violence
against women. Through
this calendar, we have
chosen to shine the spot-
light particularly on men.
Men whose actions, atti-
tudes and whose persona
reflect and exemplify the
values of respect and
equality for all.
Each month a man or
group of men are featured in
our calendar. Each man was
chosen because he has
applied his own unique and
individualized talents and
resources to enhance efforts
to end violence against
women. Some of our calen-
dar celebrities have created
or supported fund raising
efforts, some of them have
been great supports to us in
the line of duty and some
have participated in celebra-
tory events within the shel-
ter. Our "Calendar Men"
include: January: Mike Scott,
Shawn Johnson, Jeff Sabin;
February: Bob Gehan;
March: Seth Nichol, Matt
Bell; April: Jim Hollingworth;
May: Bob Morris; June: Brian
Moody; July, Jeff Bonnett;
David Scott; August: Scott
Engel; September: Sandy
Stuart; October: Allan Liv-
ingston; November: Bill
Anderson; and finally,
December: Greg Reynolds.
Huron Women's Shelter
has encouraged and sup-
ported community involve-
ment for many years. We
are grateful for the men and
women in our community
who generously support
our work. We hope these
"calendar men" will inspire
others, as they have
inspired us.
You can purchase the
calendar in Goderich at All
Around The House, and The
Women's Shelter. In Wing -
ham at The Family Tree and
in Blyth at the Blyth Festi-
val. The cost 15.00.
