demonstrate their care
and concern about people
living with or at risk of con-
tracting the HIV virus. The
red ribbon is intended to be
a symbol of hope that there
will be a cure and that the
suffering caused by this dis-
ease will stop! The Red Rib-
bon offers symbolic support
for those living with HIV/
AIDS and for those who have
lost friends, family members
or loved ones to AIDS. It
demonstrates that you care
about the impact of this dis-
ease on individuals, families,
communities and society.
In 2012, The Red Scarf
Project began on the streets
of downtown London and
Stratford, by staff and volun-
teers of the Regional HIV/
AIDS Connection. This was
the focus for the agency of
AIDS Awareness Week and
leading up to World AIDS
Day on December lst.
Scarves are knit or crocheted
by talented community
members and donated for
this key awareness raising
event. People who found the
scarves were encouraged to
wear them, take them home,
read the attached informa-
tion tag and spread the
important message of aware-
ness. In the first year over
350 scarves were made and
handed out.
Regional HIV/AIDS Connec-
tion created this community
event to spread awareness
about the local significance of
HIV/AIDS, the significance of
the red ribbon as an interna-
tional symbol of AIDS aware-
ness and to highlight the
UNAIDS vision "Getting Zero"
- Zero new HIV infections. Zero
discrimination. Zero AIDS-
related deaths. The red scarves
are enlarged versions of the red
ribbon, the international sym-
bol of AIDS awareness. They
will help raise awareness about
the work going on in the area,
through Huron County HIV/
AIDS Network and Regional
HIV/AIDS Connection.
Approximately 65,000-68,000
Canadians are currently living
with the illness and approxi-
mately 30% of those individuals
do not know their HIV status.
On Monday, December 1,
2014 the Huron County Health
Unit and the Huron County
HIV/AIDS Network (HCHAN)
were in Goderich handing out
Red Scarves that had been
donated to both agencies over
the year, sharing information
on HIV in Huron County. This
is a terrific opportunity for com-
munity volunteers to assist
with...knit or crochet red
scarves 6 inches wide by 6 feet
long over the next year, then
drop them off at the Health Unit
or at HCHAN's office, in the
Made in Huron at #10 Huron
Street in Clinton.
Huron County HIV/AIDS
Network is also looking for
more volunteers to serve on
their Board of Directors. It may
be that someone in your family
or circle of friends is or has been
diagnosed as HIV positive.
Someone close may have died
from an AIDS related illness
before the new treatments
came along that have changed
the diagnosis in most cases to a
chronic illness; and after a time
of grieving you feel you would
like to give back to the agency
that supported him/her
through their final days. We
have a small, but very dedicated
group of volunteers that are
